Another boring thread...about scratches

Hi all,

Really simple thread in reality. Not going to ask on places like MacRumors as I'll get a BS "it's just a phone" answer. I don't like things looking tattered, and if I can keep them that way, I might as well.

My current 4S has the vibration rattle issue, so I'll be getting it replaced at some point in July when I have time.

I've been using a Lucky Labs TruSkin carbon fibre on the back of my phone, which looks tacky and kills signal. Will likely be getting rid of this, as a back from Apple themselves is "only" £29.

However, I'm more concerned about the antenna band. Have been using their SpectraWraps to cover the antenna band, but am thinking of going completely naked with just a screen protector on (you won't coax me away from that :D). A question, do any of you guys that use your phone without any protection, but are careful with it (clean pockets, without anything else in them, no drops, etc) have any marks on the antenna band from use?

I'm now getting less and less anal about protecting the phone, so if others have found that it should hold up fine, I'll just go without anything.

My logic is that the buttons see the most use and don't get scratched, so why would everything else...?

Thanks all :)

I would personally always use a screen protector I highly rate Apple's was sick of the cheapo one's looking tacky and having to be replaced.

As to no protection one nasty drop and it could all end horribly wrong!

Don't be a ding bat!

I use Terrapin protectors from that auction site; extremely cheap but they're the best I've ever used.

I know, I know, but I'm willing to take the risk, trust me, I won't drop it! :P

The Speck Candyshell I had last time caused more damage than it protected against...and it's one of the best cases in that regard.

I never use screen protectors, only cases.

I get the occasional screen scratch (small one on my ip4 a month after I got it last June - none since).

Speck hard case here.

With my iPhone 4 I used it without any protection at all. Despite being very careful I got a few small scratches on the back glass. I feel like the rear glass scratches easier for some reason.

With my current iPhone 4s I have an invisisheild on the back and a Casemate barely there case.

I would at least recommend getting a protector for the back.

The back I'm not too bothered about really. I keep extremely clean pockets (squeaky clean) and always have my soft laptop case that my phone sits on when out. Worst case scenario I pay £30 for a new one.

It's the antenna band that I'm concerned about; anybody have any marks or scratches? I have another set of SpectraWraps, but would rather not use them if possible.

Will they replace it for this? Mine has it and it annoys me because it sounds sooo weird. I figured they all did it.

Yep, they will. It's a very common problem, and is virtually identical on all the phones that suffer from it. The 4S vibration was designed to be far quieter than the 4, so if yours makes any noise at all, something is wrong (my first 4S didn't have the problem).

It'll sound pretty much the same as this (same pitch too): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBinBlxoCNA

Anyone antenna band scratches without a case? Feeling tempted to go tonight now...

Apologies for the early bump, just wondering if anybody else has a 4/4S without any protection and whether the antenna has been scratched from normal use. I always have clean pockets, nothing else in them, no sand or whatever, and never hit the phone against anything by accident.

I prefer to keep my phone 'naked', but use a Shocksock neoprene pouch case which I just slip it into and out of when necessary. Feel much happier with it in my pocket that way.

Person who has never used a protector in any way, shape or form here.

Had my 4S since it was released, kept it so far in its own pocket of my jumper for most of its life. It has no scratches on it, the only markings are where I dropped it off a table onto some stone flooring (my heart leapt, let me tell you). But other than that, it's fine.

Only thing I ever used was basically a glorified rubber band that ran outside, as a grip. Didn't like it, so got rid of it. Other than that, it's been "naked" its entire life, and still runs perfectly, looks fine.

Thank you! Just what I was looking for :) I baby my devices, but I don't want to armour my phone; it's just not worth it, and makes it look and feel awful. And the (real) carbon fibre back I had looked tacky, and trapped TONS of dirt, as did pretty much every other form of protection.

Replacement is now up and running, with just a screen protector on. Cheers :)
