Possibly a lower wattage psu, unless you plan on adding another gpu at some point. And will 16gb be required? If a gaming system, 8gb will be enough.

thats what i said to him, hes a queen though and wants 16gb as it came under budget i thought i might as well make him happy.

as for the PSU, it seems i always go to high, so thanks for that! what would you recommend ? a 750?

With one gpu, a decent branded 650w would handle that setup fine. Got an 850w corsair hx running the spec in sig, along with an ssd and a 1tb hdd and 7 case fans. Power draw at the wall in games is 430w which also includes my monitor.

Would the customer be willing to go with a big air heatsink mate? Would shave a few more pound off, though you would need to swap the ram kit to a low profile pair. I can highly reccomend this.

I did have 16gb of the corsair vengeance lp a while back, ended up going back to 8gb as it was much more ram than i needed. Subsequently replaced it with 8gb of samsung green.

He would, and probably wouldnt mind either way tbh, the reason i went for the closed look was for the looks and so i could get some ram in it. i didnt want it to be a too boring build. with it being 10 quid difference, i thought id try it.

i saw someone posting about that mount doom a day or 2 a go actually. they do the job then?

also i looked at the samsung green, i know it clocks like a beast (which i doubt he will do) and is obviously low profile (to go with a chunky heatsink)

Yup, seasonic are very highly rated psu's. The mount doom is a cracking cooler, kept my 3570k under 75c in intel burn test, low 60's in games, cpu was at 4.5ghz. Still have it on my 3770k.

i might be taking my custom loop out for a bit (just whilst i get some other bits i want) so was looking at getting a cooler for mine, so might have to grab one anyway lol

cheers for ya help btw :D

Good call on the cpu Ether. 4770k will be of more use if doing tasks that utilise hyperthreading, such as video encoding. Only a few games use it at present, i only swapped from a 3570k as i needed a bit more grunt for sli'd gpu's for a few games i play.

Would your friend like a styled themed build and then stick it back on show ???

The Core i5 is more then eunff for gaming and so is 8Gb of ram ...

are you me?!?

i did the same thing at first (with the mobo and gfx card, but it seemed the gfx card was slightly lower than the other.

he doesnt care at all what his computer looks like. ive suggested some horrible stuff, and he was just "yeah thats fine"

i did tell him that he doesnt need an i7, but he wants it. :D

but wont they use it in the future?

Some will use it, at present there are very few. Bf3 and crysis 3 are two that spring to mind. I play a fair bit of bf3, with a single gtx 670 the 3570k handled it very well. It was only when adding a second gpu that i needed to change the cpu to the i7. Card usage was down to 80% use in bf3, previously 99% use on a single card. Already seeing 91% per card and that will improve once the cpu is overclocked.

he only really wants it to play bf3 (and then bf4 when it comes out)

as for the titan looking one, its out of stock =( (it does look awesome though) he wants it quickly (as in il probably order it tonight/tomorrow morning) so i can have it done for him friday.

is that elite black ram decent? seems cheaper than the 8gb packs ive been looking at (the vengeance etc etc)

Its low profile (good idea if your going to stick a massive heatsink on top of it), buts its CAS is a bit on the higher side with 11-11-11-28 ..... but its quite a nice looker :)

This has slightly better timings of 9-9-9-27 but in the real world on Haswell for gaming your not going to really notice it......correct me if I'm wrong.
