I bought the 5750 and love it, have mildly overclocked it to 800/1300.

Not really, you can get a 1GB 5750 for around £100 which should be fine as far as the GPU can keep things fed.
He's not going to get much more powerful, even second hand - the budget is a tad cramped. The first real "jump" is to a used 4870X2, but you're looking at around £150 for that.

Yes true, but I was going by the OP ceiling £, which would get you the 512mb ver, which would be pants for larger screens (possibly 
)

If it helps I will be gaming on a monitor that is 22" in size. In pixels it's 1680 x 1050.
