Another display backend besides XORG?

It's more likely to be the video driver rather than Xorg itself. If there was a generic problem with Xorg then there it would be a big deal and there would be a lot more on it everywhere online, (there may be a big thread on this on the Ubuntu forums but theres nothing on the OpenSUSE or RHEL mailing lists for example).

From other threads you appear to be using the proprietary Nvidia driver which traditionally has gone through times where it hasn't been particularly stable and caused issues. An issue between this and the kernel release which Ubuntu is using is much more likely to be the case assuming that the graphics subsystem is the source of the hangs.

If you did find another display backend then the chances are it wouldn't have the accelerated functionality you have come to expect.

It has been happening with no vid. driver.

I had a lot of freezes without the vid. driver installed. Plus how odd is it that it is happening with 2 completely different kernels, the common thing between the 2 OSs is XORG.

Well you certainly seem convinced that the problem lies with X and I really can't be bothered to argue the point further. Good luck.

I am not convinced, just think so.. If it is a kernel bug, it being in Freebsds kernel (I heard PC-BSD freezes also) it is odd timing. What do you think it is? I have Mint 10 now, not Ubuntu, all fine so far, but someone who has mint on the ubuntu forums said updating mint makes the freezes come back. I just want to use Linux to surf, in windows had to worry about getting a virus, spybot, malware, etc. I just wanted a secure OS to surf in that is all, no time to hunt bugs, I am no dev. Sorry a bit of a rant.
