In windows Vista x64 ultimate. Whilst playing the Flight Simulator game IL2 Forgotten Battles online and offline I get a black screen (game crash) followed by one of the following messages:
a. Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
b. The openGL driver encountered an unrecoverable error and must close this application error 13.
c. The openGL driver encountered an unrecoverable error and must close this application error 14.
The crash happens randomly. Sometimes it can happen within a short period of time, say after 20 minutes, however, it has been known for me to run the game for 2 to 3 hours or so before the black screen appears. Note. I never see the BSOD on my system. If I get error a, I have to reboot the system by pressing the on/off button when the system powers down in the correct manner. If I get error b or c, then I can access vista normally after waiting for a while. When the crash happens, the sound is fine and I can talk to other people on TeamSpeak normaly.
My system specification;
Antec 900 case with extra side fan to blow cool air over the Video cards and RAM.
Tagan TG700-U25 700W ATX Dual Silent SLI Compliant PSU.
EVGA nForce 780i DDR2 motherboard.
GeIL 4 GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz Black Dragon EVO ONE DDR2 Dual Channel Kit.
Intel e8400 CPU with Arctic Freezer Pro cooler.
1 x Western Digital 500GB hard drive (Windows Vista x64 ultimate).
1 x Western Digital 500GB hard drive (Windows XP 32 bit Pro SP3).
1 x Western Digital 250GB hard drive (for backup using Acronis).
DVD rewriter.
1.44 floppy.
2 x BFG GeForce 8800GT OC2 512MB (SLI).
BenQ 24” monitor running at 1920 x 1200 resolution.
Note. I use the BIOS function to boot to either operating system, by pressing the escape key and selecting the appropriate disk, so no other boot software is involved.
In Windows XP 32 bit Professional, the system is prime stable up to and including 4.1 GHz overclock. I never get a BSOD. The highest temperatures ever seen are 70 C on both cores after 12 hours of stress testing. The system has been running for the past 12 months without a single crash of any kind.
In Windows Vista x64 ultimate. I have carried out the listed below diagnostic procedure to see if I can isolate a component that might be borderline in its specification and show in Vista x 64 but not in Windows XP and to get the system without one of the described errors above.
1. Used a single video card each time to see if there is a problem with either. I still get the errors.
2. I use the latest Riva Tuner to keep the card temperatures to a maximum of 60C and 62C respectively.
3. Always used the WHQL nVidia drivers up to and including 180.48. The old ones are always removed correctly using the control panel before installing the new ones.
4. I have made sure the system is orthos stable up to and including an overclock of 4.1 GHz and then run it at stock settings.
5. Disabled the Avast virus scanner prior to running the game.
6. I have run memtest with no errors.
7. I have installed the latest nForce Vista x64 system drivers and the problem still exists.
8. I have consulted other users of the game on line and no one else appears to have this problem with similar systems, so it is not the game that is at fault.
9. Note. I do not have any other game on my system.
I see no point in re-installing the Vista x64 operating system as the problem has been in existence since day one! Does anyone have any ideas that I have not tried yet or am I destined to reboot to my Windows XP pro HD to play the game and do everything else in Vista x64? Presumably this is an OpenGL nVidia driver problem?
Have I missed anything obvious? Any sensible advice/help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in anticipation.
