I think I might be cursed with graphics cards lol. For a while now my 5850 has been acting weird, the screen will go purple and 3-4 seconds later it will go black which forces me to press the power button to restart. The temperatures are fine. Its happening more frequently now so is it dying?

Thanks :)

I have had the I7 at that speed since last August, the temperatures seem fine on that too. I have had a lot of graphics cards die on me in the past and I think it might be happening again :(

its just that system instability can be caused by unstable oc, setting cpu/gpu to default speeds and voltages is easy and quick way to eliminate possible cause.

when this problem happens does anything trigger it? e.g you try to play game then it crashes, does it happen straight away after boot or can it go for hours before it happens?

Somtimes its after about 15 minutes after boot and sometimes its after 7 hours. It doesnt happen every day just now and again. Sometimes when I do boot though the graphics card fan goes to 100 %, it quickly goes back to normal after I type my password in though.

damn thats a weird one, is the card at stock clocks? have you modified it in any way? e.g change bios/fan profile anything. If you wanted to could you make it crash out by using certain application or could it literally crash out when web browsing?

oh and did this coincide with driver update? have you tried rolling back to older drivers?

Its always when browsing the net when it crashes. I did have it overclocked, but when im not in a game its on really low clocks. Im on the 10.2 version drivers atm. Is there a newer better one out that I should download?

do you remember using prior drivers and still having this problem, sometimes the latest drivers are not always the most stable, when you oc do you also increase voltage?

I cant remember it happening with an older driver tbh. I just use the ATI ovderdrive to overclock. 775/1125 overclock when in a game.

i think you should remove oc on the card for a while and run at stock, i have oc'ed cards in the past and would get artifacting and instability even when temps were way below danger level. cant hurt to try

ah no probs, tbh i wish we could have found a solution, i have had gpu problems in the past and found them very stressful.
