Guys,

I know there are a few folk that visit these forums that have an interest in fish tanks. I would like to get some advice, I recently put a peice of bogwood into my tank that I thought was clean but it must have had some snails hiding in the middle. I now have around 3 or 4 snails in the tank.

They are doing an excellent job of keeping the algae down, but do you think I should remove them or are they cool to keep in there?

Thanks in advance.

Lamo

Depends on what snails they are. I've had 4 Apple Snails in my own tank at the same time. Like you say they are excellent at keeping the tank clean and are cool to watch. I was surprised how fast they move.

You might have to keep your eye on any of the fish that like to eat snails though. My Flying Fox loved 'em

Are they the little conical shaped ones? Some people say to remove snails from wood and plants as they're a disease risk but I've never had any problems with them. I wouldn't worry if I were you.

Sorry for the late reply, yeah they are conical shapped ones. I have removed a few of them to only leave one(wel as far as i can see) they seem to be reproducing at an incredible pace and I think I would be over run if I let them keep going.

Hey

You might as well leave them - its too late to do much about them as they have probably already laid loads of eggs lol.

They are quite a good addition to the tank and do help keep algae down. If you start to get over run then perhaps think of adding fish that eat them where tank size and fish compatability allow ( i'e don't get a puffer fish lol). I have clown loach in my tank and they love munching on the snails.

Hope this helps
Aaron

I was always under the impression the diddy conical snails produced more waste than the good they do for your tank?

You shoould have boiled the bogwood before use, woulld have cleared the blighters and removed a lot of the tannin too :)

i'd remove them asap tbh. whne i first had snails i thought it was cool but within a month they will have grown to so many that everything is covered in snails.

i reccomend spending a good hour picking each one out and then reguarly checking for any walking around picking them out whenina good position to

Whatever you do - don't squash them!! Remove them whole

Also - its best not to use anti snail solutions - as they tend die in the filters and out of reach and then they all decay and fill your tank with a surge of ammonia

Yeah I have been removing them whole. It seems like an endless task. Here is some pictures I tried to get of them One on the bog wood and one I just removed.

nah it's only a 28 ltr tank, i think clown loaches would be a poor a choice although I do think they are amazing fish

Yeah you cant get them - they need at least 50 gallons really lol.

Shame really as they are awesome at destroying snails lol
