Currently I am running a 6 year old system which is due for a refresh

Processor: Intel i7-920 2.66GHz (which at one point was OC to 3.8GHz)
Motherboard: Biostar T-Power X58
Memory: 6GB OCZ Reaper DDR3 1866MHz
Graphics: XFX GeForce GTX 295 1792MB GDDR3
System Drive: Crucial M225 256GB SSD
Other Drives: Western Digital 500GB & 1TB
Dell U2713HM at 2650x1440
HP LP2465 at 1900x1200

It is mainly used for MMO Gaming and 3D CAD/CAM work.

I would like the audience’s thoughts and advice on the following proposed changes please.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,756.04

The thinking was to go for something that allowed SLI with dual PCIe x16 so that the graphics could be upgraded down the line if required.
I am unsure about the cost/benefit of the M.2 drive over my existing SSD.
Having ignored the market for as long as I have, am bewildered by the choice in processors and the associated combinations! I also do not want to go for water cooling.

Thanks for any input you can add.

I don't think it's wise to blow that much on RAM alone.

Also what PSU do you have currently?

Considering the amount you are spending, you could easily get a X99 build instead with the 5820k CPU.

PSU Is an OCZ Silencer 750w.

Is the performance from the X99 that much better than the Z170 then? I presume you mean the extreme edition?

No its not better but it has 6 cores and 12 threads, the 5820k is the one to go for unless you wanna blow some cash.

That makes sense, so I will go for the board/memory bundle.

Why would there be a preference for the FVGA 980Ti? There appears to be little difference that I can see, but having matched MSI board and GFX card might make sense?

From another thread;
EVGA, UK Support, reps active on forums, great CS, transferable warranty, quality cards.

It doesn't matter if they are matched haha but depends how OCD you are!

Also im 99.9% sure faster MHz ram makes no no difference in almost all programs its more about the timings. Unless you were using an apu which you clearly are not lol. (correct me if im wrong but i highly doubt it)

That was one of my questions, but I was thinking about this one:

Prolimatech Megahalems Rev C CPU Cooler
or
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 CPU Cooler

I was not planning on going for SLI (x16/x16) straight off, it was just keeping one eye on the future.

If you are reusing the Antec 300 case then you need to find out the maximum cpu cooler height. No point buying a big cooler if it isn't going to fit.

You won't see any performance difference between x16/x16 over x16/x8.
