Right been reading the forum for abit now and everyone has different views so its really hard to judge whats best. I need a new CPU/MoBo/GFX/RAM i was thinking the following

Quad Q6600 (although is the wolfdale a better option)

8GB OCZ 6400 (overclock it up abit, not bad at £140 notes)

Asus P5N-T (because of the SLI, is the striker worth the extra)

BFG OC2 8800GT 512Gb ddr3.

Now after reading some people say that using a 22" monitor with a GT or GTS is a no go, i would need a GTX (i have a sumsung 225BW) so dont really know here, you can get the OcUk GTX for £40 more is this a better card, as i was reading it wasnt somewhere.

budget is around the £700 mark really want to keep it less than that as i would like the new logitech Revolution and Edge stuff, also some speakers trying to keep the whole lot under £1000. could someone point me in the right direction would like to Overclock as much as possible on air.

I know someone just posted the same question but my budget is slighlty less but require less, should be abit easier. thanks

for gaming the faster dualcore will generally be a better option, however when games start using more then 2 cores, the quads will start showing what they are capable of in gaming, but by then the q6600s maybe outdated and superseeded by quadcore penryn/phenom or whatever is next by intel or amd.

8GB of ram is totally overkill for gaming as no game ever uses that much ram. save yourself the money if you want.

unless you plan on having SLi, i will advise against an nvidia chipset MB, as they are not good at OCing quads, i am however unsure about how well they OC wolfdales.

for cooling look at the tuniq tower or thermalright ultra extreme 120 and a 120mm fan.

for the larger resoultions, the gtx is better due to the higher bandwidth, however it has a larger power draw and produces more heat, at the lower resolutions, the G92 GTS ,is about equal.

very good! get the GTX at £204.99 from ocuk atm for a 22" screen :)

8GB is overkill unless you are doing a lot of hardcore video or photo editing.

Ok so 4gb it is, is it worth spending the extra cash on 8500 and overclocking that or stick with the 6400. Didnt really come to a dicision on a Mother board or a CPU im gonna order this soon.

What would be peoples choice on MoBo that arnt nvidia. X38 or X35. Was looking at the Abit Quad, and the Asus Maximus are the performance gains worth the extra cash for the asus.

Definalty go for the GTX over the GT. Even though the GTX is a budget card from OcUk and the BFG GT is obviously one of the higher end GT's.

Also is water cooling really what its cracked up to be, if i splashed out on a whole system setup would i see serious gains in overclocking abilty

Sorry for all the questions just want to make the right choices.

thanks

if its your first build and your not the best with computers but seem to know your stuff (like me kinda lol) i'd miss the watercooling, get a spec where you could possibly add water cooling in future as a little something to do like i have!!

also ive got the asus maximus (se) mobo, great board but shame its crossfire as i was really wanting to go for dual nividia's... seen as theres a lot of stuff coming out this year

i personally and i would recommend getting a spec that will last you a good year and a half and having bits that you could move to another spec (CPU cooler ect for example).. then possibly upgrade to the 'new' technology (New Series Gfx Cards ect)...

if you get a q6600, then both the p35 and x38 are known to OC that CPU to 3GHz+, for wolfdale cores i'm not sure what is the better chipset but both support wolfdale anyway.

for RAM, PC2-6400 RAM is capable of giving you a OC to 3.6GHz with the q6600 before the ram needs overclocking. for the wolfdale core it will depend on which cpu you get, but it would be either [email protected], [email protected] ore8500@ 3.8GHz. pc2-8500 will allow for even higher clocks. this however does not take into the account the cpu may not be able to reach these speeds though.
