Before xmas i was running 2x8800gts 640mb on 1680x1050. One broke and i got a 9800gt replacement and have just sold it for 90 euros(81 pounds) so that makes the 285 purchase a bit more pallitable:p

I have since bought a 1900x1200 monitor and going to buy a gtx285. I am on an nvidia mobo so would rather stick with nvidia even if ATI give more bang for your buck atm.

a

Am i fairly "future-proof" with the 285 at that res? i know a 295 would be defo future-proof but the lack of support for previous dual gpu cards from nvidia has left me concerned

edit: oh will i be very cpu limited? ( i plan to oc my c2d to 3.6 soon)
I do not upgrade a lot so i want to ensure that this lasts me at least a year.

Cheers guys and gals:)

I'm not an expert like a lot on here but I think you'd probably be good for 12 months.

It's hard to say on cpu bottleneck as you don't say what your chip is :p

am no expert as well but i think u cpu the way it is u will b fine, and when u OC even better enjoy u new card will last u well over a year :)

3GHz is the minimun cpu speed for SLI to be even worth it so your good.

OC it to 3.4 if you really want the best out of your rig, if going for 3.6 then watch out for the fsb hole at 1800mhz

It depends on how much of a slave to graphics you are. If you want SUPER AA and EVERYTHING MAX then there may be a game or two in the coming year (and, of course, Crysis) that you won't be able to max out, but if like most of us you're happy for High/Very high then I'm fairly sure it'd last you at least a year.

im happy with 50-60 fps in games, anything else is a bonus tbh.

I have ran games at 1680x1050 for ages, so the increase in res was my main concern. i wont be going sli btw, so longevity in a single card solution at 1900x1200 is my concern also

285's a rip-off, you can get the much faster 4870x2 for around the same price.

Valid point LoadsaMoney. I sort of compare my current nvidia addiction to smoking cigarettes. You know that the 4870 is better for your pc gaming health but you continue to put the green cigarette into your mouth:p.

My pc's until 2 builds ago were always AMD/ATI so i am not adverse to getting a 4870. If i never read forums then the logical choice would be that card. What stays in my mind though is the supposed/real lack of driver support from ATI(inhales deeply:)). Also i think because i have an nvidia mobo then an nvidia card is my only choice.

Time to ponder my decision...:D
