Another "Help me upgrade" thread

Currently have a i7 950 @ 3.8 and a GTX 570 and seriously considering an upgrade. The card is a bit old now and gaming at 1200 I would like a few more bells and whistles for the latest games.

Really can not decide on what to get, I have stuck with Nvidia for ages now just because I have always been happy with them. Was considering a 780 as it looks like an absolute monster and will last me a good few years like this 570 has. However it is also over £500 and for your money is not maybe the greatest option. A 770 is still going to be a substantial upgrade on my 570 at something like 60% isn't it? And is a more realistic price of £350 or so.

I have been offered a 680 for £260 which is pretty much on par with the 770 isn't it?

Just wondering what if anything is in the pipeline? I believe the 770 and 680 are using an oldish architecture and not sure what might be coming up from either AMD or Nvidia or is that it from Nvidia for a little while?

a 680 at £260 is an absolute steal and a decent upgrade from your existing card

I would imagine that is it from Nvidia for about 12 months, AMD could be sooner, but rumours vary wildly from it being a 7 series refresh to a completely new card lineup any time from now till the end of the year

The 770 will cope nicely at that resolution and it is quite a bit faster than the 680. You could also consider the 7970/50 for your resolution and this comes with the free games (nice bonus).

The 780 is a fair bit faster but can you justify that price premium? If so, go for it

Grab the gtx680 @ £260. The only thing making the gtx770 faster is higher clocks which the gtx680 should easily reach and most likely go past.

Not 100% correct. They are using better memory modules and this allows for far higher memory clocks than the 680.

I thought 7 ghz was common on the gtx680. I have not read much on the gtx770 memory but one site got to 8 ghz and the other site could only get just under 7.5 ghz. I doubt it would make to much difference @ 1200p.

Does the gtx670 have better memory than the gtx680 as all these gtx670 went over 7ghz with ease.

As I am aware, the 670 shared the same memory as the 680. The 770 comes with faster 7Gbs per second memory modules. I would expect this to allow even higher memory clocks and one site I read earlier had them clocked at 8Gbps.

Same story with the GTX 690, it was fitted with different memory to the GTX 680. When overclocking the vram on the 690s it was easier than trying the same on the GTX 680s.
