Nope! I'm not on about my BMI, i'm building a new pc. Now i've build all my pc's fine before, but im a little out of touch these days. Currently rocking:

ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD Phenom 9600 2.3Ghz
4Gb corsair ddr2 6400
ASUS 8800GTS 640mb
40Gb Raptor hhd
500Gb and 1.5Tb seagate hhd

As you can see, every so slightly outdated  Also i dont have a clue about overclocking. Anyway, i had made a big wishlist of an i7 blah de blah with all the bells and whistles attached. But the night before i was going to buy it, i decided to have a wee read about what i was going to buy. Turns out an i7 with X, Y and Z attached was overkill for what i was using the pc for, so i scarpped it. Made a new i5 at 4GHz(an oc'd bundle from here) wishlist and in total saving myself about £500.

Now(after more reading and a little because all my pc's i've built have been AMD) i've decided im wanting to go the route of AMD and save myself even more money. I was just getting confused because amd fanboys say one thing, intel ones say another, then the intel boys come back with graphs and pie charts, and well, graphs and pie charts make me want to shoot myself.

Now this is what im looking at:

Now after reading loads of these new build topics, i know the next question

"What do you use your PC for?"

Currently use it for the odd hour or so of WOW, L4D/2 with also a little fifa 11. Other games too but im not gonna list everything. Mainly, i use my pc for watching movies on my projector. So i will also be adding a Blu Ray drive maybe the week after i buy this.

So can anyone see any problem with this build? My only worry is about the memory, will it work in this mobo fine without an OC? I thought about downgrading(or so i thought) to 4Gb Corsair XMS3 1333mhz, but it actually costs the same, or £5 more this week because of the Dominator "This week only" deal.

I'll also be reusing my Corsair H50, 750w seagate(i think) PSU, my 500gb/ 1.5tb hhd and my CM Storm case.

Sorry for the big thread, any help would be great.

Cheers.

Its funny, Im looking at doing a similar build coming from a similar spec. It may be dated but the M2N32-SLi was a brilliant board back in the day!

Just wanted to give Morlock a +1 as that's the board I've finally decided on. Was contemplating going with an Intel build as I have a nVidia graphics card but the prices are too high.

Just to follow on from Morlocks point, there are no 6gb Sandforce drives available to my knowledge to the additional controller card is a waste really. The £27 saved would go a long way to 128Gb SSD, in which case, would only cost you another £70 (ish)

Ok, controller and 790fx out, gigabyte(excellent choice my friend!) mobo in! i'll also swap the ssd for a slightly bigger one? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-007-CR&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=910 Im not too fussed about how big the hard drive is because its only really for windows n maybe afew big loading games.

Least the 800 chipset amd boards can be upgraded to bulldozer when that comes out? or did i read that wrong?

Also, is there any point in the dominator ram when the XMS3 will run just as fast?

+1 J.B, M2N32-SLi boards were very awesome! just a shame i cant find any boards these days with wifi built in. Least wifi cards aint expensive. Also J.B, from what i've been reading, you wont notice much difference between intel and amd unless your doing a lot of benching, to which i think the average person doesnt.

Just to put a though out there because I have been making decisions around the same scenarios recently. If you are buying the 965CPU and the 890FX motherboard with native SATA 6Gb/s support and USB3, then there is no price difference bewteen going AMD or the i5 route.

I'm no Intel or AMD fanboy I am just stating a fact about the price.

ok jbs, i wanted to see how true that was. when i changed the mobo to the gigabyte, changed the ssd to a slightly bigger one(£10 more) and removed the controller card. Price came to £613.61 inc delivery.

Building an i5 system with the same stuff...

now true, this would be better for games and what not, but the good thing woud be my memory will work at 1600mhz(and the fact the whole builds £50 cheaper). Fair enough, the gigabyte 890FX is a newer mobo with better stuff and obviously the CPU is faster, so thats where the money goes. I'd have to OC the i5 CPU and like i said, i dont have a clue how to do that, tried to read up on it before and my brain just scrambles.

Buying the OC i5 bundle with again the same gpu and ssd comes to £643.72 inc delivery. I really am in a pickle haha.

Go with the i5 build. It will outperform the Phenom II even at 2.8GHz stock speed, plus it will overclock much much more than the AMD. Until my i5 I had AMD all the way back to my Intel P3 650 :). But sadly the old truth that AMD offers better value for money is no longer true looking at i5 7xx and Phenom II X4. With the price hike on Phenom II and drop on i5 760 just this week, i5 is now cheaper than Phenom II X4!! Total no-brainer now. I hope bulldozer brings something great to the table for AMD.

Not that this should affect you build, just so that you are informed - Intel are releasing their next generation platform (Sandy Bridge) on the 5th of January (less than a month and a half away), this will replace their current s1156 platform (including i5 nahalem) and is meant to be a fair bit faster than current i5s, but come in at the same price points.

However, this will involved waiting. If you want a system now - an AM3 Phenom II X4 or Intel i5 system will do you well. However, if you go with i5 I would go for a GTX 460 1GB instead on the 6850 and a PCIe x8x8 P55 board with SLI (like this).

Right ok, i5 it is!....sorta. I was hoping to get it in a couple weeks, plan delivery for either the 6th or 7th december because i still have a couple days left to take before my christmas holidays. I was sorta hoping to play with something on my days off. BUT! just looking, i'll be off till the 10th January, so really i'll only be waiting an extra few weeks. Plus i'll have more pennys to spend. Think i'll read into this sandy bridge everyones talking about. Does look like i'll be going down the route of intel though. least i can buy blu ray drive n what not while i wait!

Cheers :)
