Looks a pretty sweet deal to be honest - All that for £189! :o

Will be looking to get one of these instead of a Microserver methings for a little lab.

Xeon 3430
1GB Ram
250GB HDD
300W PSU

a little more than rivals, its a 2.4ghz quad, blows it out of the water

Yes, but the Microserver (used to) cost less, uses less power, and has a neater footprint for "home" use. Swings and roundabouts.

Lets face it, you wouldn't use either in a heavy production environment.

That is a nice server (max 16GB RAM, PCIe x1, x4 & x16 slots) but it's for a different role to the Microserver.
Wonder if it's any good for a VMWare lab...

It looks like a bargain for a machine to go in a server room, but the Microserver would still be far more suitable for home use.

I made the mistake of buying an ML330 G6 for my small office. The data sheet for the ML330 G6 stated at the time that its "whisper-quiet fans make it ideal for small office environment [sic]". Mine sounded like a jet aircraft taking off. I rejected the server and got a full refund from HP. I bought a custom-built PC from one of Overclockers' rivals instead, which is very, very quiet.

IIRC ESX(i) doesn't support the storage controller, so you'd need to put in a third party one.

Yeah, just checked what it actually had in (Smart Array B110i). Wonder if the "Integrated SATA" controller it has for the optical drive will see a hard drive.

Pretty sure the HP microserver thing is unofficially supported in ESXi

The price was ex. VAT it looks like. Bought 2 from a server supplier which will work out at around £230 a pop including VAT after I get the rebate.

Best I've seen inc. VAT is £218.76

from a main direct server supplier

A working config is a bit different to a VMware supported config ;)

Pretty much the only VMware supported RAID controllers are hardware. Any of the cheap onboard ones (MicroServer, ML110s) will just show the individual disks on the host- no RAID.

Yup ESXi sees the drives from the onboard controller but no raid. I've just slotted in 16G now I need to find myself some drives and a raid controller - any suggestions ?

Yeah thats too old for the G6. Its past it now. He really wants a P212/P410 with at least 256MB RAM onboard. Ive actually got one spare... but anyway they can be had cheap.

So disappointed with the G7 model. Its such a rip off. The equivalent spec to the ML110 G6 Quad Xeon model is a grand for god sake.

All it really offers over the G6 is ILO3, full Gen2 Pci-e slots, and the option to have 4 hotswap drives behind the front grill, and a redundant PSU option.

Now thats not the £1000 model, those options are even more expensive, making it totally pointless, as for that sort of price no one is going to be looking at an "entry" level server.

The £500 model is just a dual core opteron too, so its almost downgrading for still being more expensive than the Quad Xeon G6.

In addition... the G7 is louder in operation as it has three fans instead of the G6's 2, AND the 460W PSU versions for the Xeon CPU's and redundant PSU options are the same ones as used in the rest of HP's rack servers. LOL.

So there goes a nice quiet and cheap entry level server. Ive no idea what on earth they were thinking.

G7 specs here incase anyone is interested....

The ONLY thing that was wrong with the ML110 G6 was the normal model did not have HT on the X3430 xeon.

Im running three ML110 G6's all with 16GB of RAM in a VM lab, and they are great. Was hoping the G7 might offer something even better value, but it seems not!
