Another 'mixing RAM' question

In acme's chair.
So on my PC I do lots of RAM intensive things like video editing, editing large image files, occasional 3D modelling, occasionally running VM's, allocating portions of RAM for server use etcetera :p

I have a 2x 4GB kit of Corsair Vengeance Black (1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v)

And I have a 2x 8GB kit of Patriot Signature Line w/o heat shield (1333MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v) which runs stable at 1600MHz w' 1.5v.

Do you think these four RAM modules will 'play nicely' on my Extreme 4 Gen 3 given that they all happily run at 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v?

I did recently have a 4GB matched pair of 1333MHz Hynix, a 2GB stick of 1333MHz Samsung and a 2GB stick of 1333MHz Kingston working together on an Asus AM3 board (can't remember the model) without issue.

Might do, Wouldn't it just be easier to stick them in and boot the machine? See if it works?

Yknow... I was thinking that as I created the thread... But I decided to continue typing and just leave it :D

I thought someone who knows more of RAM than I might have some clever answer relating to 'strain on the memory controller' or something else RAM related. :p

random off-topic question, but are you attending i49 SeraphX?

Bah, just whack em in and take out if you have problems :)
I used to run this without any trouble in the past:
-Different manufacturer (G-Skill & Corsair)
-Different size (2*2GB & 2*4GB)
-Different default voltage (1.65v & 1.5v)
-Different default timings (CAS7 & CAS9)

That said if any of the server functions you describe are critical it may be best to err on the side of caution :)

Cheers HangTime, I will probably give it a go on Tuesday afternoon :p

The server functions are such that there will be data corruption if the system crashes, but the data gets backed up every 24 hours.

My sig says it all :D

Sitting here with the usual bunch of programs open (skype, fb messenger, chrome, foober2000, sticky notes, background shiz) , not doing anything particularly intensive, RAM sitting at 13%, CPU at 1%... This is the life

Your sig - How do you find it running?

I'm running 8gb Corsair Vengeance @ 1600 (9-9-9-24) and really want to get another 8gb from 'Deal of the Day' (10-10-10-27), but I dont know how the speeds would affect the performance.

Would the 1866 just come down to 1600?

Sorry, no hi-jack intended, just curious!!

Yes, your system would automatically downclock it. Memory can not run at different speeds.

Yep. The Vengeance may be able to overclock to match it, but I wouldn't bank on it. It might have just been my motherboard, but my vengeance wouldn't overclock at all.

As for how i'm finding it running, it feels exactly the same for general usage, I haven't yet had a chance/need to do any of the things i mentioned in the OP.

It is stable though :)
