Hi, have had my current pc for a few years now, and it has more or less reached the end of it's upgradeability.

Have recently got a new benq 24" 120hz monitor, and will be upgrading the rest in January.
I will be getting the nvidia 3d vision kit, so need to stick with an nvidia graphics card.
Otherwise I am open to suggestions.
Have a couple of grand to play with. Want something that will really fly and be good for a couple of years at least, willing to overclock - but not to extreme lengths.

Looks like Sandybridge is going to be a better bet than an i7 950?

Here is my current plan.

Sandybridge 2600k - overclocked to about 4.5ghz about £300?
corsair h50 or h70 - is h70 overkill? (presuming they support the new socket) £80
P67 1155 motherboard - fairly top end one, I like Asus. £200?
8gb memory - OCZ platinum 2x4gb 1600mhz (i assume is better than 4x2gb if overclocking?) - would faster memory be any use? £200
Geforce 580gtx - any really, maybe a slightly overclocked one if only 10-20 more than standard. £450
nvidia 3d vision kit £120
corsair 700d case. £150
corsair gold 850w psu (would like to have capacity for si in future, would 1000w hx be better?) £150
OCZ revodrive x2 240gb boot drive + games £500
western digital black 1tb storage drive £100
12x blu-ray rw drive £100

not sure if I will get away with re-using my oem windows 7 for a completely new build? if not then another £100

total £2450 (maybe a couple hundred pounds less once I get exact costs).

I know the revodrive is probably completely unnecessary, but I want it anyway!
Budget isn't a big problem, but would be happy to spend a bit less if it doesn't compromise performance and "future-proofing".

Any thoughts?

8gb ram wont cost you £200 mate...more like £120-£150
personally i would go for the 1000w psu and make sure its modular with efficientcy of 85+ as this will save you some on your electric bill
also those revo drives are like 500-800 mb/sec read/write speeds so you may find the motherboard is bottlenecked at that.....most are not sure about the new p67 boards!
so raiding 2 is pointless unless you buy a decent raid card like areca...i would imagine you could use your key again for windows 7....if not phone them and tell them your doing a fresh install and youve bought the O/S and it wont let you install theyll give you a key over the phone.....

I would go with the Samsung F3 1TB drive instead of the WD, there will virtually no performance difference.

Sorry it wasn't clear, it is 1 revodrive x2 (the newer version, basically the same as the ibis but just on a pci card), rather than 2x revodrive.
Good point about the m/b though - will have to see what pci slots they come with as the revodrive needs a pci 4x, so will need to see how many lanes are available?

If the motherboards aren't very good, may switch back to a x58 and i7 950.

That particular memory is £182 on OC at the moment, I just rounded up. May end up with a cheaper 2x4gb version depending on costs when I am ready to buy.
How much of a difference do the memory timings make to performance?

If you are spending 2k on a computer, why blow it on LGA1555 when things like LGA2011 and AM3+ could potentially blow it out of the pond a couple of months later?

because there's always something better coming along in a couple of months (although lga2011 isn't going to be around until at least Q3 from what I've read).
You can't win with computers. A couple of months ago, it was wait until the geforce 500's come out, now it's wait for sandy bridge, then it's wait for the next thing and so on...

You've got to take the plunge at some point.
And if nothing else, if all the other bits are top notch, I can always replace the motherboard and processor later on if necessary.

Freddie - apparently SB can hit 5Ghz on air cooling, so unless the h50/70 are much worse than I think, it should be ok. If anyone knows better, feel free to correct me.

Cammy - I am a bit out of date on overclocking. Am I right in saying memory is completely separate from CPU overclocking these days? But that memory does look pretty good.

Hedge - You're probably right, I could get 90% of the performance for a grand. But a, hopefully spending the extra will keep it able to perform at the top level for longer, and b, for once I can afford to get something a bit special so why not?

The really pricey bits are the graphics card - a 570 would do pretty much everything I need at the moment, and the revodrive - a normal ssd would still be lightning fast.
Those 2 things alone would drop about £500.

the ram and cpu are linked when overclocking.....when you clock your chip your ram will go up aswell so if you buy crap ram (not that you would) it will bottleneck your chip much quicker

mate i say if youve got the money then buy it...i know i do

acording to what iv read they can be OC'd to 5ghz on air cooling so i guess its more than possible.

so could i7

q9650's were doing 4.6

all the early overclocks are ****** they are the cream of the crop the pick of the sylicone

wait till they hit the shelves to see what they clock at rather than the pre release *es* samples

I'd be tempted to drop the H50/H70 for an air cooler with better performance like the Gelid Tranquilo- the H50/70s don't provide anything above what a much cheaper air cooler would.

Your memory's a bit overpriced, and I'd think that Corsair RAM would go better with your overclock anyway.

I'd also be tempted to spend an extra bit of money and get 2 480s/570s instead of your 580- at that end of the market, single cards get blown away by SLI configurations for the same money. That said, you could easily afford to drop to cheaper configurations and not lose performance. 3 460s could be an option.
