Hi guys

I've been lurking for a while considering my new desktop PC and thought as everyone seems so helpful here I would try and get some opinions.

My current PC needs are served by an XPS 15 laptop as the my old XPS 420 desktop is now some 9 years old and as slow as hell (I did change the graphics card from a 8800GTX to a GTX460SE in 2011). In short, a system replacement is well overdue.

I want to be able to play any of the latest games on good settings and be able to get on VR although I'm not likely to early adopt. The PC will also be used by my wife and needs to be able to used for work/media stuff.

The monitor I currently have is a 10+ years old Dell monitor and while nice enough it would be good to get a higher resolution, larger monitor (not huge!). From what I've read I'm not convinced that 4k is worth it at the moment but open to convincing otherwise and any suggestions on the choices available.

Hard disk wise - I do need storage and loving the gain of SSD so considered just speccing a high capacity SSD instead of going down the small SSD/large mechanical drive route favoured by most. I guess the reason is purely cost? I'd like the PC to be as quiet as possible.

I have an old 7.1 speaker set up and soundcard on my old pc but these days it doesn't look like this is needed anymore?

Budget wise I'd probably prefer to pay more like £2k all in but at the same time I'm not a great believer in false economies so currently included a 1080. A 1070 would probably be sufficient for my needs but I doubt I'll be in the market for a new desktop for another 5+ years so I'd like to be set for a while.

Hopefully some useful information. Any views or comments would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers!

Thanks for the responses its much appreciated. There's so much choice when it comes to components like graphics cards with the same specs that its difficult to know the differences between them.

Is there no need for a separate soundcard these days?
