Hi All,

im looking at an OC full system built for me. Will be used for all types of gaming. Budget around GBP5k but also dont want to waste if not needed. At the moment im leaning towards the below system. Would you make any changes to this, i9? Looks of the system not so important to me. Just want to play all games on best display and no headaches.... And also potentially be able to upgrade as they years go by. not sure on the cooling below but quiter the bette...

Here is a self build where I tried to keep a lot of components the same, I have changed some where a clear upgrade was sensible.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £4,146.82 (includes delivery: £0.00)

The prebuilt configurator you were looking at is limited in a lot of areas and does not give you the options you may want. I will go through the choices and give you reasons and alternatives if sensible.

Case - Pure personal choice , if you like that Phanteks one then go for it.
CPU - If you are spending £400 on a cpu get the version with an igpu for just £20 extra , it can be a real help when troubleshooting.
Mobo - I like MSi mobos so picked a high end version in similar tier to the Gigabyte Auros.
RAM - I would be looking to get at least 6000mhx cl30 ram, no option that good in the configurator and limited choices instock on ocuk.
GPU - All 4090s will perform similarily so get the one you like the look of most. I picked Zotac because there is anecdotal evidence they do not suffer as much coil whine as Asus/MSi for this gen of Nv cards.
SSDs - I picked a better selection for you.
AIO - You do need good cooling with a 13700k so i picked a 360 and a very expensive one as well. The configurator does not specify which AIO you will be getting which I think is not good , is always best to know what you will actually be getting.
PSU- The configurator again does not specify which PSU it will come with so it will most likely be a Kolink and I would prefer the thermaltake model I picked.
OS - Its windows, source it how you please.

As you can see the above build comes to £400 less than the configurator and has higher tier components in some cases.

I priced up a Gigabyte themed one for you (don't know if you like them, but that build is mostly Gigabyte :o ), I couldn't fit the Gigabyte AIO because it is too thick for the case you chose:

Intel Core i7-13700K (Raptor Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail - £419.99
Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard - £329.99
Aorus Gigabyte RGB 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C40 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit - £188.98

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 4090 MASTER 24GB GDDR6X PCI-Express Graphics Card - £1,889.99

Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X Digital Midi Tower Glass Gaming Case - Black - £214.99
MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 UK PSU 1000W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply - £219.95
be quiet! Pure Loop 280 Performance CPU Water Cooler - 280mm - £99.95

WD Black SN770 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS200T3X0E) - £149.99

Microsoft Windows 11 Pro 64-Bit DVD - OEM (FQC-10528) - £164.99

Grand Total: £3,690.80

Pretty sure if you ask for a quote it will come in a lot cheaper than the 4k5 one.

thanks very much Haz and Tetras,
if printed both your recommendations and will try get my head around them and go with one of those! could i just send the specs to OC and they would quote on it and assembly? never bought from them before...

quick question, is the i7 better then the i9s/k or just value for money better? (for this type of gaming build)

Yes, I believe they will give you a quote for a custom build, if you ask.

VFM. The i7-13700K (or 13700) has 8 P-Cores and games mainly care about P-Cores, since they are the high performing ones. The 13900K (or 13900) also has 8 P-Cores, but doubles the number of E-Cores to 16. The main advantage of the E-Cores is in multi-threaded workloads like rendering, but the 13900K does also have higher clocks and more cache, which is still helpful for games. At higher resolutions you'll usually be GPU bottlenecked, even with a 4090, but if you play at 1080p then there is more difference between CPUs.

The i9 is technically better , Tetras explains it well above. The major problem with the i9 13900k is that it is just too highly clocked and is well outside the efficiency curve. What this means is you are using 50w more to gain 1% extra performance, that 50w of energy consumption has to be paid for and you have to cool it as well. IMHO the i7 13700k is a more sensible gaming cpu and costs less as well. You could have 2 systems side by side , one with i7 and the other with i9 and if they both had a 4090 you would not be able to tell the difference when playing a game.

seem to be leaning towards your suggestion thanks Haz and close to ordering.

I see new AMD cpu getting a bit of attention. think this week we may know more? I might just see what thats all about first , you all think thats an option ?

I think there are going to be price reductions on AM5 cpus this week or at least bundle deals that should save you money. There is a problem at the moment where there are a variety of decent choices, can argue all day what the best option is and both a 13700k or 7700x PC are excellent choices.

The new AMD cpus coming out are the 7950X3D , 7900X3D and 7800X3D. The review date is under NDA so we do not know when the reviews will be out or the cpus available for sale. The 7800X3D will be by far the best value and most likely highest performer in games but that is rumoured to be the last one released and not until April. If you are wanting a prebuilt by OCUK you may have to wait a bit longer than that as well, likely to sell fast.

Yeah I should have been clearer. The 7950x3d will most likely be the best but it will be horrendously expensive for 1 extra fps and we do not at the moment know how the windows thread scheduler will handle the 2 CCX , 1 with the 3D cache and one without.

Wait for independent reviews before making solid plans.

oh i thought the one this week was the best performer for games... Ryzen 9 7950X3D

Reviews are out now, if you look at the usual places on YouTube and the web. If it was me, I'd still go with the i7 13700 or Ryzen 7 7700, unless I played at a low resolution, or really liked the games that benefit most from the cache, but since you have the budget, your call.
