Another power supply problem? clicking when upright

Howdy,

Just got a new seagate 7200.10 today, which I am going to install vista on. I plugged the hard drive in and switched on, but when I did there was a clicking noise - sounded like it was coming from the psu. Everything spun up and stayed on for a few seconds, but it didn't post and there was no display. Happened every time I tried to turn it on.

So I unplugged the hdd completely - same thing happened.

Tried laying the case down horizontally and it works perfectly fine. If I try to stand it up then the computer just turns off.

This is a PSU issue I presume? This mean I need a new one?

I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the way of the fans - even when upright every fan comes on, and when the computer switches off the psu fans continue to run as they should on the noisetaker, no clicking.

I'm currently burning vista to dvd sideways...

No, I should probably try that. Am running vista right now so it can't be too much of an issue... Will try a cmos clear after the reboot for gfx drivers.

edit: I had (and still have) a 7200.9 as in sig. They're both in atm

If that's the problem, you definately need a new PSU!

EDIT: You could even have the PC upright, then put the PSU on top or outside the case on it's side. If it works then, again, it's gotta be the PSU.

Okay, interestingly I removed it, tried it seperately and it was fine. Put it back in and tried it upright again and no problems.

Hopefully this is the last I see of this issue, but it'll probably come back one day and kill my whole computer (although I find that unlikely really - when it was having the problem the blue light on the front of the lanboy, and the power light, were unsteady and obviously weren't getting enough power to stay on, so I'm doubting it would be able to take anything out)
