I need advice on a new mobo. So the big question is - do I replace the mobo like-for-like or get a new mobo/cpu combo. (see spec in sig.) and if so - do I need to get new RAM too? Questions, questions. Since I've been out of the rig building game for a few years I'm looking for a non-nonsense build with something that will future proof me at the same time. Budget not a problem - but something that gives value for money/middle of the road preferred.

Are you sure that these parts are at fault? What test have you done? Take it out of the case and run it on a desk or table, it could just be shorting on the case somwhere. You may not even need to replace the components unless you want to upgrade lol, which I would consider in your case :D

O and how much do you have to spend?

Pretty sure it's the mobo. When I remove the 12v power lead to the 4 pin molex connector which supplies the CPU the computer attempts to boot. Everything is stable. When that 12V rail is connected - the computer just stalls after about 1sec and cuts the power.

It could be a short I guess - but in the meantime I'm looking to get a middle of the road mobo/cpu/and I guess RAM so that I'm future proofed. Nothing high end as games tend to benefit from the GPU primarily (I;m not even sure if they benefit much from 4 Vs 3 cores) and I don't run anything else that really taxes the computer apart from Photoshop Elements.
