Hello everyone.

Basically an update broke my ps3, need to find a replacement of some sorts.

But I am not happy with there customer service so...

I could buy a preowned ps3 or get a preowned Xbox 360.

a few questions.

1. I heard that Xbox 360's have a 3 year warranty, correct?
2. I know 360 doesn't have blu-ray, but does it have good streaming abilities.

3.Xbox live, worth £40?

Thanks

Why dont you get it fixed? Cheaper than either option TBH and you have a nice new shiny 160GB PS3, which is worth £20 more if you trade in than it cost you to fix your old one.

The three year warranty only applies to the ever popular RROD or E74 errors. Anything else is standard 1 year. The main issue with buying a pre-owned console is that when/if it decides it has had enough and you go to get it repaired under warranty via Microsoft and the previous owner has already registered the console to them then you are in trouble.
Live is personally worth every penny although no wise person pays £40 for a years sub, have a search and you can get it for around £26.
Never had a problem with the media streaming side of things although its not something I use overly often.

It would be nice to hear from someone who owns both.

I have a few friends who own both of these systems and they genuinely think there's no difference between the two as far as game availability, game play, third party apps (PS3 MEdia Server or XBMC) goes. Regardless of what one person says because they own the system or what they were told by the game shop boy (who are 90% of the time full of it).

So really it's up to you mate but which ever you choose will be a good choice.

The main factor in choosing between the two is which one the majority of your friends use. They both have their pros and their cons and the easiest thing to say is that in terms of gaming experiences they are both equal, so rule that factor out unless you're super interested in one particular consoles exclusives over the other.

The other factor is of course Blu-Ray like you mentioned. If you have Blu-Ray's and no player to play them on then it's a bit of a waste buying a 360, if you were just streaming your content from a PC to console then both consoles have apps that will do that for you, I prefer the 360 for this purely because I like Windows Media Center but that's just my personal preference and in no way am I saying one is technically better than the other.

Just combine those few factors and buy the console that ticks more pros than cons in your personal spec list.

it would cost £100+ to get it fixed, preowned one is £150.

Exactly you pay £50 more for an old console when you can have a new one, thats all.
You wont get a 3yr warranty with 360s anymore unless you find and old model or a pre-owned one less than a year or 2 old.

Yes but if it does get fixed, it will only have a 2 or 3 month warranty, compared to a 12 month warranty that a preowned ps3 would give me, and i could sell the other ps3 parts as spares.

Sorry didnt make myself clear, say you pay £110 for a refurb 160GB this worth £150 trade so you have an extra £40 to go towards your console of choice.

Well for me it'd be PS3. I generally go the cheaper option which when my 360 breaks is to just get another since buying the equivilant amount of controllers, games and online content on PS3 would be very expensive compared to keeping the stuff I already bought.

If you really think your bored of PS3 then you can switch to 360 which has some good titles like Dead rising, Dead or alive 4, Halo titles, Gears, Fable 2, Lost odyssey, Forza, Alan wake, etc. But if there's still titles you want on PS3 and you have a big library it's generally easier, cheaper and quicker to just replace your system (if your wanting to buy the same amount of games).
360's are more reliable now and have the built in wi-fi so there's little difference but you would have to pay for online if you play online.

I have all the systems and they're all good but in the end go with what titles you want most and price.

Personaly I rather the feel of xbox. I don't really like how the PS3 online aspects are set up so much. But having said that I am not an avid console gamer and will always buy on pc if I can and wouldn't bother switching consoles If I already owned a lot of content for one of them. I did switch from a ps2 to an xbox when my ps2 broke many years back and have always enjoyed the xbox's exclusives more and the feeling of the controler.

Having said that though, the d-pad on the 360 controler is a joke and should have been fixed years ago. The ps3 controllers also feel a bit more sensitive, which can be a plus once you are used to it.

I go for 360 for reasons mentioned above. I own all 3 main consoles, along with the Iphone, DS, PSP and game pc. I spend more time playing on my 360 than any of the others.

oh my I just realised with the cost of buying a plug and charge kit and the wireless adpater and xbox live, I might as well get another PS3.

Decision made, PS3 it is.

Thanks for the suggestions.

own a gaming pc ? if yes ps3 is the only logical choice but sometimes the 360 version of multi platform games are better.
But you can pick up a jasper 360 for next to nothing second hand anyway so I say get a ps3 and cheap 360.

If you buy a second hand console from high st shops they give you 12 months warranty anyway but there's no telling how badly the console has been treated by it's previous owner so could well break shortly after 12 months.

Personally I think the cooling in both machines is incredibly poor so no wonder all the problems.
