hi there,

I'm putting together a general purpose rig which will be used for work stuff (application and web development, photoshop, a little encoding, small amount of gaming , virtualisation - VMServer)

I'm currently looking at the following:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard Gainward ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz SLI-Ready Edition Low Latency Dual Channel DDR2
Western Digital Caviar Blue 80GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (WD800AAJS) Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)

I addition I am bringing over my 500gb Samsung SATA and IDE Pioneer DVD-111 burner from my the existing rig.

Now my questions are:

My existing rig is run with an 380w earth watts psu from an antec case. Would that be sufficent to run all the above?

The would it also be enough to power the rig with 8gb ram instead of 4gb?

I will be running either XP 64bit or move up to some flavour of vista 64 but can't decide yet.

Many thanks

it'd just about be enough, as long as the PSU can actually deliver 380 watts. why chance it though? a nice new corsair vx450 would EASILY manage, and is only £50 :)

More than just enough, those parts might reach 200W if you could put every single component under full stress.
Games can barely load two cores so in practise peak draw is probably 150W.

OK thanks. So would swapping the q6600 for a q9550 make any difference power requirement wise?

The Q9550 has the same 95W TDP as the Q6600 GO so there are equal on power requirements.

The Earthwatts 380 is a solid unit and would be fine for the above setup. The Q6600 would even be fine at 3.0Ghz as they will nearly all do that at stock voltage. A better cooler helps though.

Consider changing if you want to add a high power graphics card later.
