Hi i brought some 2nd hand ram 4 x 1 gig crucial BallistiX PC2- 5300 667MHZ

Installed them into my machine and wont even post. Tried 2 sticks, then 1 stick.

And it still wont even post.

I don't think its the ram though as strange as it seems. I think its something my end!!!

Ive got 2 one gig sticks of pc2 5300 667mhz all the numbers are the same

Advice on what to do :(

Hey mate, I got your email, just saw your thread on here thought you may reply quicker here, so read my email and get back to me on that.

As mentioned the recommended voltage for these sticks is 2.2v

What is your motherboard also?

hmmm it looks okay, no obvious issues, what happens exactly does it post beep or does it just not post at all?

Doesnt beep or anything mate. Like i said i think its the mobo or settings. I have been into bios and it mentions something do with with vrdram or something and its 1.8??

I will check now.

Im a noob when it comes to things like this

But like i said, im not blaming you. And im sorry if the email or this post has come across like that :)

Yeah it's okay, keep all the questions on the forum to avoid confusion haha

So you can get into the BIOS...

There should be a section with voltages, an in there should be the DRAM setting or something

I'll have a look see if I can find the exact instructions :)

ok yeah ill keep to on here :)

Ive been into the Dram settings and it says 1.5v

I then have the options of auto, low, normal and high

But i cant set it too an exact number like 2.2v

If they have been OC does that mean they could be higher than 667mhz then they wouldnt work?? Because my mobo doesnt like it?

DRAM Frequency
If [Auto] is selected, the motherboard will detect the memory module(s)
inserted and assigns appropriate frequency automatically. You may also
select other value as operating frequency: [200MHz (DDRII 400)], [266MHz
(DDRII 533)], [333MHz (DDRII 667)].
Flexibility Option
The default value of this option is [Disabled]. It will allow better tolerance for
memory compatibility when it is set to [Enabled].
Configure DRAM Timing by SPD
Select [Enabled] will configure the following items by the contents in the
SPD (Serial Presence Detect) device. If you select [Disabled], you will find
the items “DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay”, “DRAM RAS# Precharge”, and
“DRAM RAS# Activate to Precharge” appear to allow you adjusting them.

DRAM CAS# Latency
Use this item to adjust the means of memory accessing. Configuration
options are [6], [5], [4], [3], and [Auto].
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay
This controls the latency between the DRAM active command and the
read / write command. Configuration options: [2 DRAM Clocks], [3 DRAM
Clocks], [4 DRAM Clocks], [5 DRAM Clocks], and [6 DRAM Clocks].
DRAM RAS# Precharge
This controls the idle clocks after a precharge command is issued.
Configuration options: [2 DRAM Clocks], [3 DRAM Clocks], [4 DRAM
Clocks], [5 DRAM Clocks], and [6 DRAM Clocks].
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precharge
This controls the number of DRAM clocks for TRAS. Configuration options:
[4 DRAM Clocks], [5 DRAM Clocks], [6 DRAM Clocks], [7 DRAM Clocks], [8
DRAM Clocks], [9 DRAM Clocks], [10 DRAM Clocks], [11 DRAM Clocks], [12
DRAM Clocks], [13 DRAM Clocks], [14 DRAM Clocks], an d [15 DRAM
Clocks].
Primary Graphics Adapter
This allows you to select [PCI] or [PCI Express] as the boot graphic adapter
priority. The default value is [PCI].
OnBoard HD Audio
Select [Auto], [Enabled] or [Disabled] for the onboard HD Audio feature. If
you select [Auto], the onboard HD Audio will be disabled when PCI Sound
Card is plugged.
Front Panel Control
Select [Auto], [Enabled] or [Disabled] for the onboard HD Audio Front Panel.
CD-In
Use this item to enable or disable CD-In of OnBoard HD Audio.
OnBoard LAN
This allows you to enable or disable the “OnBoard LAN” feature.
VCCM (DRAM) Voltage
Use this to select VCCM (DRAM) Voltage. Configuration options: [High],
[Middle], [Low], and [Auto]. The default value of this feature is [Auto].
+1.5V Voltage
Configuration options: [High] and [Normal]. The default value of this feature
is [Normal].

Thats from the manual of my mobo

Just to confirm i CANT get into bios with with the 4 gig in it.

My screen is blank no beeps and it doesn't post or anything like that

That is so strange, mine did the exact same thing not long ago as I also have Crucial BallistiX

I'm just going to have a look on the internet.

If it is indeed the sticks that are faulty, however I can't see how it is because you saw the memtest screenies I did and they worked fine in my system.

But if the sticks are somehow faulty they have a lifetime warranty so don't worry about it :)

Well let me know what you find. I cant see the being faulty. Its possible i guess. When in the mail they could gone something that i dunno has fried em lol

I still think its my mobo and settings. But i know jack about bios, settings and oc, cmos the list goes on ;)

I just had to double check I wasn't a prat and I didn't give you my RAM but nope. You do indeed have the other pair as on the screenshot in the members market, if you look at the end 2 letters, you have 2x RCs and 2x KW's, where as I have 4 KW's, so I haven't got them mixed up lol

So both you and me have had the same problem with BallistiX not booting with 4GB, I did however get mine to work but I can't remember what I did.

Is there a way to clear your CMOS on your board?

Maybe you could wipe it and configure from ground up? But being that you don't know much about the BIOS I doubt that is a good idea :p

I will try and find some instructions online.

If I can't don't worry, we can just email Asrock to ask if they have any issues with BallistiX, and if not ask Crucial for a replacement :)

Oh and at the comment about being damaged in transit they wouldn't have been, because they were all wrapped up in anti static bags and bubble wrap so it can't have been that :)

so the mobo is **** then lol!

I dont think i could flash the BIOS and start fresh, aint got a clue what to do.

Can i fiddle with the ram voltages or not??? And put it on high lol

I don't really know what to reccomened mate. Under this situation I would usually update the BIOS and reconfigure but being as you don't know exactly how to I wouldn't reccommened it.

Best bet is to contact Asrock, see what they say :)

Haha no problem mate :)

Never know you might be able to get a better price for them :)

Those things are supposed to have a lifetime warranty anyway, although I'm not sure if you have to have a receipt or whatever I'll just take a look :)
