ok i jsut built a machine and bought a copy of OEM window, my question is, i heard about changing certain components require a new activation key, but does reformating without changing the components require a new key? or can i use the one that came with OEM?

The key is linked to both the case and the motherboard, although only the motherboard makes any difference. You are violating the eula if you use another motherboard, even if you do not reinstall, however I very much doubt you'll ever have a problem with that. To re-register the product I believe yuou kust phone microsoft and explain the situation and they'll re-activate the code for you.

Never swap out the motherboard for another and not reinstall unless they are exactly the same board (even the same chipsets will use different hardware, such as networking and sound) as it camn cause multiple problems such as new devices not installing and general instability.

hay i thought he meant reformatting but not changing any hardware, in which case he's ok on all counts isnt he?

I thought the same!

If your using all the same components but just want to reformat and re-install then I'd advise copying the WPA.dbl and WPA.bak from the system32 folder then after you re-install just copy them into the system32 folder. That way you should avoid having to re-activate the OS.

If you reinstall without changing anything then you should be able to activate automatically just as you did before. The OP is confusing an "activation code" with the product key, though - you should never have to use a different product key to the one included with the software. If too many changes have been made (provided it doesn't include the motherboard for OEM software) then you will be required to phone for manual activation which requires an activation code (for one time use only) which you type in.

Just for your info guys, I had my mobo, psu & processor die on me last Sunday and replaced them all and they were all different. Re-installed my OEM WinXP Pro and activated it using thier automated telephone system...no problems what so ever.

ok thanks, coz i was jsut afraid phoning them up was gonna be a mess and confusing. Coz i jsut thought its time to do a reformat and start over as i got load of crap on here.

I've had to reactivate xp on three machines several times due to upgrades and not had a problem - irritating though

And against the terms of the license if you bought an OEM copy.
