Right to start with im currently using a AMD X2 4400+ 939 setup and have been promising myself a decent upgrade fro a while now.
Ive been lucky enough this week to come into an extra £250 so have decided to go for it. Although its not quite the full upgrade i wanted (different mobo and mem)
The main requirements of this build is that the mobo must have 6 sata ports min, beable to support more than 1 video card as i use my system for folding as well as gaming etc.
At present i have a 9800 GX2 and a 8800 GTS (G80 core) and these must be able to run. I know the mobo ive chosen doesnt support SLi but as these are not linked together i dont see a problem.
I would have preferred a mobo that could support 3 or more video cards but dont have the budget for that yet but could get one at a later date.

below is what ive put together so far

The only thing im really worried about is the mem as i do intend to overclock the system as soon as i can. Im hoping to get 3.6+ out of it as that seems to be normal for the cpu i have chosen.
The system will also be watercooled passivley with a Zalman reserator and a D-Tek fusion v1 Cpu block.
Any suggestions welcome any changes must be within the budget of £250-£260 inc Del which i have to pay

There has been a change in plans since i orginally posted my spec
I have just aquired this mobo Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe AM2+ from MM saving me over £30
So that give me a little extra to spend on the CPU so trawling the OCuk Shop ive found this PhenomII 940 OEM
Now if i remember corectly these are the same as the 940BE retail CPU's but just no HSF
As i mentioned in OP i dont need a HSF as the system will be WC so would this be a better CPU than the 720 or should i stick with my original choice and save myself a few Quid

Hmmm its a tough one as both are good chips. If you do heavy multitasking or video encoding then the extra core comes in handy else just pocket the difference.

If you are thinking about going to ddr3 and am3 at some point and using your existing cpu then the 720 will be fine but the 940 will not as it doesn't have the ddr3 memory controller. <- moot point if you knew this already :p

The way im looking at is i havent updated the cpu since i got this X2 4400+ and that was nearly 3 years ago or more.
So i am summising that it will most likley be another 2-3 years or more before i upgrade my cpu and mobo again.
As for heavy multi tasking then i would say yes as currently i fold on 3 gpu's whilst watching vids, downloading and trolling the forums.
I also have been known to do some encoding but havent done some in a while as it slows my pc to a crawl.
With the Quad core i can fold on 2 of them and use the rest to do as i please, i will also be able to install a third vid card allowing me to fold on 4 gpu's
So i dare say i would most likley make use of all 4 core's, it would also allow me to get back to some serious gaming without compromising my background task's
