Hey,

I'm a bit out of touch with networking equipment :( who is top dog at the moment?

Looking for something with 5GHz wireless - built in ADSL modem and GigaE would be nice, but not vital. Cheap is good :) so is reliability!

Cheers,

Su

Cheap routers and reliability don't go together, I'm afraid. ;)

Personally, I'm a fan of Linksys. I've got an E3000 myself, which is epic with my Infinity connection. It does both 5GHz (simultaneously with 2.4GHz) and gigabit ethernet, but it doesn't have an onboard modem.

You may struggle to find something with 5GHz, gigabit and an onboard modem for a decent price, as router-modem combos tend to miss functionality on the router side of things.

Ok cool - I have a D-Link ADSL2+ ethernet modem, so I don't mind getting a separate router (just wanted to combine boxes for tidiness!).

KIA, the Billion does seem to be highly rated, but doesn't support 5GHz wifi? :(

Cheers,

Suman

The absolute best 'home' (so no Cisco, Juniper etc) router/gateway I have used is what's currently hanging off my Openreach VDSL2+ modem – an Apple AirPort Extreme. Dual band wireless-n, internal gigabit switching, and stable as anything. Switched it on a few months ago and not had to touch it since. Worth every penny.

It really depends what you want the router todo - if you're a group of people aka a family sharing a connection then really the billion 7800n is not a good choice. It's qos is questionable and it's sharing bandwidth is static so for example if I allocate myself 20% then that is what I get regardless whether I need it or not.

After discussion on whirlpool's billion forums I went for a netgear 3700 less than £100 with an adsl modem (converted a net gear 834 I had - google it ) I updated it with gargoyle firmware and now I have proper qos+it has an active congestion handling for gamers/VoIP and stats a plenty. I've done a more detailed post a week or so ago but bear in mind I have a line problem which brought my 8mb line down to 500k and I could still game with it and have the family share the connection, something the billion struggled on.
