I've notice that my MG ZS needs a top up of water every now and again, I had a look today at the dipstick and oil cap and saw the following mayo:

I put a reconditioned engine in the car about 2-3000 miles ago, I hardly ever drive it far and mostly it does one mile journeys to work, the dump or the supermarket. It has never overheated but as I say I have to top up the water every now and again. There was a small water leak on a pipe but I believe I have fixed that.

I emptied the oil and removed the filter and there is no sign of mayo there:

Could the mayo just be from the constant short journeys? There is never any oil in the water, as I say it's never overheated either. Maybe I just need to retorque the head or something, but I don't like those stretch bolts. :(

Damn Rovers.

Just go and give it 25 miles or so, Trouser Wearing Foxs BMW had some mayo a while ago iirc but thats all it was from, short trips.

hmm, drained oil looks clean, i'd still prepare the wallet though thats quite a lot of mayo in the cap and on the dipstick is not good news.

Get a garage to do a "sniffer" test on it. A good indy garage should only charge you a tenner (if at all) to do it.

Very short trips will cause this kind of problem (ride a bike or walk if you're doing 1 mile!). However, if the engine is still losing coolant that's not a good sign. Is the engine ever reluctant to turn over?

Engine turns over fine and fires straight away. I've just put some new 10W 40 semi synthetic in and replaced the coolant in my lunch hour.

However annoyingly the heater isn't working (blowing coldish). I noticed yesterday that the heater wasn't working properly but I had just put that down to losing some of the coolant level However it's still not working, I flushed through with a hose before I changed the coolant and it seemed to flow no problem. I used the bleed bolt and nipped it up once water started trickling out. I'm hoping it's just an air lock but I can't seem to get any more air out.

PS. I do walk to work 90% of the time, it's just if I'm going shopping or picking up bits from Halfords or B&Q over the road I take the car instead. ;)

MG badge on back = another sign of HG failiure.

I have a feeling my 'HGF' is the same as your one was on the 5 series, my short journeys. I'll see how it goes now. Having a Rover just makes me extra paranoid about things like mayo.

Need to track down where the water is leaking from though, I've had to top it up every couple of months. I expect if I get underneath I'll spot where it is coming from - I did have a leak from the pipes at the back of the engine but that was a noticeable drip that I got rid of. Maybe I didn't get rid of it completely.

Just posting about mayo on the internet = HGF. I was simply amazed by the amount of internet hero mechanics who diagnose HGF even if you post 'The other day I noticed that my car needed some petrol'.

:D

The annoying thing is that most people don't ever check things like their dipstick or oil cap so would never have to put up with this kind of worry. ;)
