I run Linux 24/7 though I do game in Windows also. I don't game as much as I perhaps should to make use of even the rig I have now! GPU will have to be nVidia due to superior Linux support.

beejjacobs: I simply specced the same PSU I have now. Are XFX PSU's better than Corsair? Just want it to be reliable and not get upset a couple years down the line like my Tagan did :)
I like the MSI motherboard as it has an Intel NIC and all of the good stuff but without pointless WiFi and bluetooth etc. A little shy of Gigabyte due to the cold boot issues with my Rev1 X58A-UD3R.
I did ponder going i5 instead of i7 but it seems like a backwards move.

I prefer AMD GPU's but they have issues in Linux, whereas nVidia supply superior drivers. Gaming is near as much out of the question when using an AMD card in Linux :( I have a 5850 at the moment.

My HX650 has flat cables, much prefer them to the braided cables on the XFX, unless I'm missing something, they look tidier imho :)

Really looking for opinions on case too! Don't want to spend silly money but looking for quality with a nice amount of space and airflow. Currently I have an Akasa Eclipse and was considering downsizing though it's not mandatory. Certainly looking to make things quieter!
 
Ivan, selling the system as a whole so will need to repurchase PSU! :) Could get the 750W this time perhaps, though I doubt I'd ever go dual GPU.

Case-wise I am not keen on models with over the top fronts etc, minimal is better. Perhaps all metal including front, though I have a Lian-Li PC62 here and it's side panels resonate at the slightest vibration!
Buttons and usb ports on the front of the case preferred. Doesn't have to be too cheap! :)
 
Anyone got any other words of wisdom, alternate specs? Looking to keep the build around £1000 but under £1200, don't need software or peripherals :-)

Really stuck on case choice. Though quiet running would be nice! Going to be overclocking though I don't like to push the volts, 4.4 would be nice :-) Not set on i7, as aside from compiling I doubt I'll make much use of HT. GPU will have to be nVidia due to superior Linux support.

I use a HX650, so quiet I cant actually hear it at all and the modular design is nice. I dont like the flat cables myself though because they do not bend easily or tuck into the case very well. It should last me a long time I hope, 650W is plenty if you dont plan on ever running two GPUs

For a case well I love my Coolermaster CM690 II, no alienware-esque nonsense design, just solid, spacious, airy and fairly cheap to boot.

Decided to not buy a new optical drive, and to get the i7 instead!

Went for the XFX PSU due to the extra wattage and will put up with the braided cables, perhaps they are better than they used to be! :)
