Firstly, apologies for yet another thread for help speccing a new system. The feedback on this forum is top notch but there is just so much of it and I haven't built a system for a long time.

Looking at a new build to replace my now ageing and creaking system that I put together about 6 years ago:

Windows XP Home SP3
Samsung 913N
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 333MHz FSB 1.83.GHz
Abit KX7-333
Coolermaster Aero7 Lite Fan
Corsair TWINX1024-32LL DDR499 / PC3200
NVIDIA Geforce 6200 running at 1280x1024 recently replaced a a sadly deceased Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
Seagate Barracuda ST3160023A Plus 160Gb 7200RPM ATA/100 8Mb Cache
LG GSA4120BB 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer Internal IDE

This was originally used for a fair amount of gaming but in more recent times for general use, surfing the internet, etc ... The spec was good up to about HL2.

I've got as far as speccing the following (i.e. not very far):

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Antec 300 case
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache or Samsung SpinPoint F1 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)

I'm going to be keeping the monitor which has a max resolution of 1280 x 1024 but everything else is to go.

It is still going to be general use, surfing the internet, word, excel. It would be nice to be able to play the odd game (family committments permitting!) though it would probably just be games I haven't been able to play since HL2, i.e. Far Cry 2, Crysis, and poss COD: Modern Warfare 2, though not too bothered about latest and future releases. I guess I don't need to spend silly money to play these games at 1280x1024 like I did before when I buying the 9800 Pro. I don't want to spend over £100 on a graphics card when I could just buy an xbox.

I'm leaning towards Intel for this build though could possibly be swayed back to AMD again. Most importantly the budget is £500ish including os but I don't want to spend more than £500 for the sake of it, just want quality components to make a system that will last another 3-5 years.

Thanks for the very quick reply.

Had a look at http://emsai.net/reviews/cpu/ and compared numerous Intel and AMD CPU's and AMD definately better bang for buck. Is the mobo/cpu combo you suggested a good one for overclocking ? if so how much ?

Could stretch to AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) which seems to give you a lot for your money. IS this a better option ?

Was also thinking about going for an older gpu perhaps Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4670 Ultimate "Passive" 512MB GDDR3 or Gainward GeForce 9800 GT Green Edition 512MB GDDR3.
