To be honest a laptop would be used predominantly for coursework, internet browsing web development, some coding and photo shop editing.

I'd like the option to dual boot, with windows and linux, and will set a budget of upto £1,000.00 but would prefer to go no higher than about £600.00 -£700.00...

Am happy using the 15.6" I'm currently using, and a GPU is not really that important unless it would give an edge when using programs like "Photoshop CS5"...

If you intend to do propper video editing on the inbuilt screen your only option is to get any 15.6" machine with an LED backlit 1080p display and make sure it comes with or you upgrade it to the AUO B156HW01 V4 or V7 display.

All other panels have 60-65% adobe colour gamuts, the above models have 95%.

V4 = matte
V7 = glossy

There are US boutique companies who will ship models in your price range (after import tax of 20%, no duty on imports) that have this panel fitted.

I'm just considering my options... If upgrading my laptop saves me from having to spend out again a year down the line then yes I will upgrade, but for an outlay for a decent sized SSD, say 250GB atleast, am I not better to consider a new machine? That is all I am trying to determine

Yea bang on, selling your current one and buying new is always your better option with the lower end machine. Unless you have a high end machine where the depreciation could be highly painful.

Do you want to game or not. There are two superb options in your budget but I would look for the Lenovo Thinkpad Egde with ati 6630 graphics if you want casual gaming or a Thinkpad L series for ledd gaming but slightly better build and battery life.

All come in around the £500-£700 depending on spec. See this thread here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18371689

There is no point in spending any more than that on a functional machine. Only spend more if you want to do some serious gaming too.
