(Another) Spec me an upgrade thread.

Hey,

I've currently got:

Core 2 Duo 4400
Gigabyte DS3
2GB Corsair 5400 DDR2
300GB Maxtor Drive
Hiper 580w Type R

and am having problems where occasionally it will not boot into windows at all. It just says "Disk boot failure" and won't boot. Normally I can try restarting and then it works. I think it may be my PSU as I've read about how they are blowing up regularly/are faulty. I'm planning on upgrading my RAM and getting a new PSU. What would you guys recommend? What else would you upgrade? I'm a student so money is pretty tight!

Bit of both really. I'd upgrade soonish if I didn't have the error.

Looks like a didgy HDD to me ... try running SCNDSK /r and SCNDSK /f

Thanks, will do. What about the RAM, is is OK to buy 2 sticks of the same RAM and run 4x1GB? What kind of wattage do you reckon I need if I buy a new PSU?

If you want 4GB of RAM, you'll need a 64-bit OS.

The 580w will be fine providing your running about 8 HDDs

I quite like the idea of getting another HDD for backup etc.

Sounds like your hard disk is duffado. Maybe sort this out first before you change the PSU. Are there a lot of reports of these Hiper PSUs going bang?........

Quick question if anyone knows...

If I replace my PSU with the Corsair HX 520W will I need anything else to power 3 HDDs? Is it just a case of replacing the PSU or will I need to replace all the cables too?

unless you loose all the cables for your corsair PSU, just change the PSU and plug the new one in and hope it isnt DOA or faulty
