Sorry to start the same thread again, but I'm still unsure about what processor/mobo to get :D Using this comp for multiboxing wow and lots of oblivion modding. It's running too slow for me atm :( Plus I've got 2x 5770's, and am only able to run 1 atm. Here are my options:

Get a new mobo for my q6600 and OC it. £150 (with P&P + thermal paste/cpu cleaner.)
Get a Phenom 965 and am2+ mobo. £265
Get a i3, mobo,ram and fan to OC. £404
Get a i5, mobo, ram and fan to OC. £470

It'd take me 6-8 weeks to get enough money for the i3/i5 settup, would they give me any more performance than an OC'd q6600 or a 965? Gief advice pl0x :D

If you read the specs carefully it only does 1X16 and 1X4 pci-e slots.

One of your 5770 may suffer.

" 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots, support ATI CrossFireXTM technology, at x8 speed
(PCIe x16_1 blue, PCIe x16_2 black*)
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot at max. x4 link(black)"

I thought that meant it did x8/x8 crossfire :(

Just noticed, my sig is from one of your posts :D:D:D

Comedy gold!

Give me a few minutes to check some back issues of custom pc for more motherboard info.

Tried checking asus website and the specifications, now I'm even more confused.

And it all becomes clear!

Its got three pci-e connections for graphics cards.

Two will run at 8X in crossfire.

The other one at 4X even tho its 16X in lenght.

Sounds like a good board.

woot ! I think my heatsink is just stock atm, should I look at getting a better cooler if I'm going to OC it? I'll be getting a new case with it too, if that makes a difference

Everyone raves about the titan fenrir cooler.

I will look through my mags for suggestions, unless someone chips in with a suggestion.

you're the best :D you're posts are always funny too :D:D:D

a friend of mine once had a q6600 @ 3.4ghz meh thinks, how high would I be expecting to get this with a fenrir cooler?

Titan fenrir - nothing.
Scythe Kama Angle - fiddly to fit.
Gelid Tranquillo - stingy amount of awkward to use paste.

They are the three top and not to expensive coolers I can find.

The little comment is from the reviews.

All those coolers are really good apparently.

All about £30.

If that's the only negative comments in the reviews, then they must be good.

You still watching this thread Stulid? If so, I've been told I can only OC my q6600 to 3ghz max with my current ram. Nanya 2x 1gb 2x 512mb (PC2-5300). So I'd need to pay for some PC2-6400 or PC2-8500 which would make my basket £230 / £242 with the cheapest options without including a new cooler to help OC. If I went down the 965 route for £265 would it be better than buying the memory / mobo / cooler for the q6600? Thinking that it might be easier to buy the 965 @ 3.4ghz with an amd2+ board and not have to overclock at all, or the 955, in which case it'd cost roughly the same as the q6600, and I might get away with doing a little OC with stock cooler. Or would my current PC2-5300 also hold back the 965/955?

*edit* If something isn't in stock atm, how do i find out when it'll be back in stock? :D

You can use memory dividers in the bios to keep the ram at it normal speed.

Not the best option, overclocking both CPU and ram together is best.

Sorry to sound noob, but what does that mean? :D Go the amd route or stick with q6600? New ram or old? Don't forget, I live in Wales, hence I'm not very bright :D

The cheapest DDR2 that's good is the PATRIOT 4Gb PC2-8500 that's on special offer this week £89.98.

The problem then is, you have invested £240 on a motherboard, ram and cooler for a socket that is phased out.

I just knocked this up.

AMD PHENOM X4 955 £135.99
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO £88.99
OCZ OBSIDIAN 4Gb DDR3 £89.99

total is £314.97

You can sell your Q6600 for at least £60 just for the CPU.

That board is ok.

88.99+135.99=£224.98 for the 955 phenom CPU too.

You will still have to make sure in the motherboard bios that the ram isn't run faster than it can manage, using memory dividers.

The other issue I found out is, to run memory in dual channel mode, the sticks of ram have to be the same size.

Unless I can find some good ddr2 ram in the local shop, guess I'll go the am3 route, it's only £20 more if I'm buying the ddr3 from OCUK.

I think that board you linked does crossfire x8x8 :D and might be a bit more future-proof, if the next socket of amd processors will be able to run in a am3 board. :D
