Guys,

Got a family of 2+2, and need better space than a saloon currently gives me. I'll have around 10k to spend. Current car - 320D SE (05 - E90)

Current thoughts are around a Volvo V70 D5 SE, a local Jaguar 2.2d x-type. I'll need the extra space to cart the kids & their toys around (bikes etc), but especially for camping over summer months. This weekend brought home the fact that we need a more practical car, as we had to take 2 cars just go for a bike ride with some friends (who we met there). Took me longer to sort out the bikes on the cars than we did actually riding I think :(

The cars:

Volvo V70

Jaguar X-Type (can't link to it): 55 plate, 2.2d Sport, 5 Doors, Manual, Estate, Diesel, 35,000 miles, Black. Partial leather seat trim, ABS, Alloy wheels, Reverse parking aid, Immobiliser, Side airbags, Sports seats, Traction control, Front head restraints, Front fog lights, Electrically adjustable passenger seat, Electrically adjustable drivers seat, Audio remote control, 3x3 point rear seat belts, Steering wheel rake adjustment, Remote central locking, Rear electric windows, Heated door mirrors, Front electric windows, Electric door mirrors, Alarm.

Any other suggestions?

Lolvo miles better than the Jag.

Jag has: unreliable engine, small interior and will likely lose you a lot of money in depreciation.

I think the Volvo will be your best choice if you want something with lots of space.
It's a lot bigger than the X-Type.

The only other car I would recommend would be an E320 CDI.
However, these will probably cost more to run.

The pre-facelifts also have a few electrical niggles afaik.
Stay with the Volvo :)

Never closely inspected an E90 but I can't see a jag being any better space wise, the interior on the x-type is decidedly cramped.

Ok, thanks guys. Booked test drive in the Volvo tomorrow, so we'll have to see.

E-class has always appealed, but I can't afford one of the face-lifted versions :(

Agreed, vovlo is the better bet - X type is surprisingly cramped for a car based on a mondeo and the 2.2 diesel is much more prone to diesely failures than the 2.0
