So, it's getting to the point where I'm going to be getting myself a car in the next few weeks. I have about £2k to spend (£2.5k max but that has to include insurance which is looking like about £5-600)

I'm 25, but unfortunately have 0 no-claims, and have 3 points due to come off my licence next month (although insurance people ask for the past 5 years instead of 3 don't they?)

Anyways, I'm looking for something reasonably comfortable and reliable, also with a bit of kick to it if possible!

I've been looking at the following, which are round about my budget, however knowing virtually nothing about cars I would value some input from the more experienced members on here to avoid buying something completely turd!

The ones I've been looking at in this price range are all around 8-10 years old.

Couple of saloons, although I'm partly wondering if in this price range anything I get will be a bucket of rust?:

Mitsubishi Galant - purely in terms of looks, I think this is the sex :p
Volvo S40
BMW 3 series
Ford Mondeo

Also been thinking about hatchbacks:

Honda Civic
Renault Clio
Peugot 206

Just wondering if there are any to avoid, any other suggestions, things to look out for etc? Any feedback appreciated.

Nice, was a bit concerned I would be told to avoid the Galant! What are they like in terms of reliability?

The ones I've been seeing for £1.5-£2k are around 80-120k miles, anything I should be looking out for at that point, or any expensive repairs looming?

I'm guessing, being as they're slightly less common that parts can be a bit difficult/expensive to get hold of?

What's the MPG like on a 2L

Thanks guys, that was easily settled, now it's just a matter of waiting for my money to come in and finding a decent one nearby =P

Galant? Aren't those cars a bit barge like in terms of the way they drive?

You won't find any problem free E36s for this money. They're all going to need some work or some sort, so for a £2k budget, don't bother. Unless of course, you find one with tonnes of history, receipts and evidence that the owner(s) have spared no expense on it. Then again, you could probably have as much chance of winning this Friday's EuroMillions... ;)

This is pretty much what I was thinking, hence considering some of the cheaper alternatives - e.g. the hatchbacks.

Still keeping an eye on what's kicking around of course ;)

Just been to look at that silver one, seems solid all round, exterior is in great condition, pretty much flawless other than the few light scratches to be expected from a 10 year old car. Interior likewise, also looks much better in the flesh than in those pics! Gave it a bit of a spin, lovely and smooth, nothing I could notice wrong with it, everything tested and working! The only problem I had was that the indicator stalk is on the right, confused the hell out of me to start with =P

Absolutely loved it, looking forward to picking it up on Friday!

Woo, picked it up yesterday, and work decided to send me straight off to Gloucester, so a nice hours drive up the motorway =P

What can I say, it's the easiest and most comfortable car I've driven, took me a few mins of fiddling to get used to the cruise control, but after that pretty much sitting back and enjoying the ride!

First project is a new stereo and speakers (the ones in there are dire!)

Anyway, have some shinys!:

There are a couple of tiny little scrapes and scratches, but nothing really noticeable. Also a few scuffs round the door handles, and some scratches on the rear bumper just by the boot, otherwise it's spot on. =)
