A long time lurker, first time poster so please be gentle:

My current machine is a pre-built hp with a few extra bits in there but it's starting to groan a little, the only things I will be re-using 1.5 TB and 300gb hard drives, possibly the GTX 260 as a phys x card, but I will take your advice if that is worth it or not.

The basics are:

Budget approx £1200 ( I can go a little further if it's something special), no OS, monitor, or anything else needed. So just the base unit.

I need additional storage, for video and games so will need a case with at least 3 HD bays.

Main usage will be gaming at 1080p, have looked at 1440p but I can't justify the price of that just yet. (potential sli in the future for that res)

I want to start dabbling in photography, and cad but as an amatuer nothing more.

I need a wireless card in there also, currently using a 10 year old dongle thing which is pretty poor.

I'd appreciate your advise on this,

Thanks

Leaffy

Thanks for the quick replies.

Fire fly there's no extra storage in the except the ssd what would you recommend to go in there in terms of a traditional hd?

Also what's the difference between those two cards? And the mobo are quite a a way a part too in price what are the differences?

Thanks again

I've just had a look at the first spec again there not a case in spec.

Am I right to think the up45 has wireless built in?

Could one of you guys help spec me a build with bluray drive as well?

Thanks

I think I will have a go at overclocking I’ve seen there are guides on to help me, somehting Ive never looked at before due to locked Bios. Im currentl running a Q6600 at stock.

I like the case, obviously the show off inside me wants my mates to be in awe and the windowed case would definately fit the bill.

I know that a the common consensus is i5 over i7, from what I've the difference apart from the slight clock speed increase is Hyper Threading, sorry for my ignorance but that does this mean?

From the first post Sparx suggests that £1200 might be a bit steep for base unit only, what kind of performance increase would i see from the £1000 spec (+£56 bluray drive) compared to the £1300 one?

From what you say in your OP it would be best to stick with the i5, I doubt that you would see much benefit from the i7 vs the extra cost.

Between a build costing £1000 and one costing £1300 you will get similar core components 3570K, Z77 MB, GTX 670 GPU, SSD ect. The extra £300 difference will be mostly made up of slightly better quality components with more features, Thunderbolt Port on the MB for example, a better cooler, and a more expensive case.

Also if you are wanting to get a BluRay drive then get a retail drive as these come with the software required to play back BluRay disks.

Hi guys,

I'm just about to press go and order myself my new system I just wanted a quick sense check to make sure I’m not making any obvious mistakes, and for a bit of reassurance that I’m not dropping a *******.

The following is from a competitor, however i believe if I don’t link it I’m ok.

KFA2 GeForce GTX 680 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail OCZ Agility 3 240GB 2.5" SATA-III Solid State Hard Drive
650W Corsair HX Series V2 80PLUS Gold Modular Power Supply
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Jet Black 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 10 XMP Dual Channel Desktop Memory
TP-Link 300Mbps Advanced Wireless N PCI Adapter [TL-WN951N]
LG BH10LS38 Blu-ray Writer Full Retail with Software Internal SATA
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler
Fractal Design Define R3 Titanium V2 Midi Tower Soundproof Case
3TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3.5" SATA III Hard Drive

Total £1317.41 (inc delivery)

Just to note that the only reason ive gone for the 680 is that is is slightly cheaper than the Windforce 670 spec'd above.
