Hi,

I have around £300 possibly could stretch to £350 and I am after:-

a) Q6600 which one?
b) 4g ram - good timings and overclockable
c) psu - something to power this lot up
d) mobo

I may overclock so pls recommend parts which would enable me to do so...

thanks in advance

When you say which Q6600 I assume you mean which stepping. G0 is the better cooler running stepping.

RAM - I get on well with the Corsair XMS2 RAM and it overclocks well in 2gb configuration.

PSU - COrsair 520W is always recommended.

Mobo - Would leave you around £100ish for a mobo

You'll be lucky if you spend significantly less than this:-

OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £54.99
(£64.61) £54.99
(£64.61)

Antec EarthWatts 500W PSU £46.99
(£55.21) £46.99
(£55.21)

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) £29.99
(£35.24) £59.98
(£70.48)

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £144.99
(£170.36) £144.99
(£170.36)

Total : £371.18

thanks,

how well will the system overclock with Melbournes suggested parts?

also will that PSU hold fire for long?

would think 3gig should be do able, above that just depends on what sort of voltage/heat is like with the retail cooler.

psu should hold its own for a while.

Having a second look at my choices you might be better off with something like a GB P35 DS3 or Asus P5K as they are better at clocking quads. All of them (OCuk IP35 included) should do 3-3.2GHz easily though, we talking about a difference at the high end.
