I want something relatively speedy and fun to drive. (bare in mind i am coming from a 1.4 Mk4 golf, so not exactly a rocket)

i have had my heart set on a 2.0T S-Line Audi A3 for a while, but am also wanting to think about other options. Doesn't have to be a hatchback, can be a 2 seat sports car, or a coupe i am not really bothered. Only real requirements are that it is reliable and isn't high maintenance and it must be insurable at a decent price! I am willing to spend up to £1500 on insurance. (When i had a very quick look a couple of months ago on the audi, the chepest i got on a comaparison site was about 1400)

Think that covers everything.

Any ideas?

That's a lot to spend on an Audi that will look the same as every TDi on the road and is being replaced in a year or so.

I'm not sure where my money would go, how about something a bit 'mental'?

People have got very good Z4's and 350z's for this money recently. I'd stay away from the 3 series, decent ones will be e46's which are starting to date and I doubt you'll get a decent engine/spec e92.

Just a bunch of random thoughts really.

Whilst it's true, so does pretty much every mainstream car, as there the low end diesels that always outsell the high end performance range of any given model. The 335 looks isn't that different from a 320d for example.

That said, i'm not sure what i'd recommend for £10k for someone who just wants a bit more power and a bit of fun.

Are Civic Type-R's to mental for you? Are 2.0 Focus' too mundane? When you say you don't want it to be "high maintenence", how much are you thinking?

Yup - hence me throwing Z4 and 350z into the mix, they always look 'special' and don't have a million TDi lease cars owned by reps.

Civic Type-r isn't too mental but i don't particularly like them. A focus ST would be ok.

And the high maintenance was really if anybody was going to reccomend anything japanese and modified!

Also i forgot to mention this will be used as a daily driver to and from work etc aswell, so it can't be TOO mental. But really i am wide open for suggestions aslong as it is quite quick i am happy (maybe something turbo'd will be good?)

There are a whole bunch of 'hot hatches' that probably fall into your budget if you would be happy with a Focus ST.

Leon Cupra
Golf GTi
Mini Cooper S
Astra VXR

etc...
