Im a relative novice to the custom build computer area looking for any advice/ input anyone can give.

Mainly for work running a fair few apps at the same time, medium to heavy gaming.

Processor (CPU)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2 X 2.00GHz) 800MHz FSB/2MB L2 Cache

Memory (RAM)
2048 MB CORSAIR XMS2 800MHz - (2x1GB)

Motherboard
ASUS P5K SE: DDR2, SATAII, PCI-e x16, 2 PCI, 3 x PCI-e x1

Operating System
WINDOWS XP Home

Hard Disk
Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM

Optical Drive
NEC AD7170S Serial ATA 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Graphics Card
256MB GEFORCE 8600GT PCI Express + DVI + TV-OUT

Also if anyone could recomend casing and a PSU etc that would be great :)

A Lian Li PC7+, they look bland on web shop pictures but if you search the case central section of the forum you will find a thread full of them with some good pictures.

Good quality case for the money and good cooling.

I would recommend a Corsair VX power supply, not sure what wattage these come in without double checking but should be more than enough to power that rig.

Edit: Corsair PSU

Getting this CPU would save you £20 with very little if any difference in performance:
E2180 (2 X 2.00GHz) 800MHz FSB/1MB L2 Cache

Wouldn't you be better going for Vista instead of XP, especially if you plan on playing any games using DX10, if not then an ATI X1950 will be faster in DX9 than the 8600GT will be.

This PSU should be more than enough to power your spec:
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

For cases its really up to you, its you that has to live with it.

Looked at the C2D E2180 and it seems to have 1MB L2 Cache not 2MB, and was under the impression that i should be looking for at least 2MB.

Was really wanting to use XP as im not a big fan of vista.

Only wasnt sure about the Case and PSU as i have a m8 when he bought a case he wanted found it couldnt fit his motherboard, just wanted to avoid that.

1MB l2 Cache is nothin on C2D these chips overclock really well and no difference is noticed atall.

Yeah my mate has a E2160 and I have a E4300 and his is just as fast as mine with both running at 3GHz, and his runs 20C cooler with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 while I'm on a Noctua U12F. So I would definatly go for a E2xxx over an E4xxx now.

edit:
Aslong as you choose a case that fits a full size ATX mainboard (which something like 95% of cases will) then any atx or micro atx board should fit.

Seeing my bank balance didnt make this very easy so i tried to cut costs where i thought i could and this is what i came up with based on the recomendations i was given about processor etc.

If there is anything else that needs modifying just shout at me :)
