Hi guys, i am completely out of the loop lately and need some advice for my son.

His current spec is
Q6600 @ 3.0ghz
DFI Lanparty P45 mobo
4GB Geil ram

He is in college, so is on a budget and will be looking to buy used parts.

He has a budget of about £150-£200 after he sells the above rig, so what would you recommend?
Either a 2500K or 3570k, mobo and ram?
Or what is the AMD equivalent?

Id wait 3 weeks for the Intel refresh, then hopefully get a discount Z87 mobo and the best CPU he can afford. I'd get the 8gb Hyper X ram kit that's on sale now for £45 now though, its on the homepage.

So you'll have up to £200 to spend on a full rig once the one you've listed gets sold?

If that's the case I wouldn't bother right now, I'd save instead.

A reasonable 2nd hand Intel CPU will still cost around £100 which leaves very little for everything else.

What does he use the PC for?

These are assuming he has a GPU.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £82.99
1 x Asus H81-PLUS Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £49.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £47.99
Total : £190.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Or AMD - The motherboard could be downgraded, likewise there is room for an improved cpu or mobo in the Intel build.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £79.99
1 x Gigabyte 970A-UD3P AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £67.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £47.99
Total : £205.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

why not just buy a heatsink, overclock the cpu more and then get a 2nd hand 7850 for 80ish quid (and get another 4gb ram)?

Thanks guys.

Main use will be for Gaming, he has a HD 5850 now but will be upgrading that soon.

How does the AMD Piledriver FX-6 6300 compare to the 2500K or even a 3570K?

edit. 2500K is way better for gaming lol (thanks google)

Some good deals in the MM atm. :D

Comparing the 6300 to the 2500K, is like comparing Moyes to Ferguson. :D

*snigger*

You might be better off getting a half decent motherboard and RAM and then pairing it to a cheap 1150 CPU which will allow an upgrade later. Problem is for £200 you really won't get a big improvement over what he already has.
