Hi All,

I know there is a few of these threads around and some of the suggestions have pretty much pushed me down a particular route, i would just like to check it with the experts first :)

I am currently looking to give my machine a bit of a boost so that i can get the Witcher 3, Star Citizen and possible other future games running at 60fps on high if possible in a 1080p resolution (or higher if possible). I only have a budget of about £400 and i am thinking of just doing a single GPU upgrade with maybe an SLI jump in 6 months time to give it a further boost (with a psu upgrade if required at the same time). I would then look to swap out the cpu, motherboard and RAM next year.

I currently have
i5 2500k with a Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler so i will be overclocking the chip
Asus P8P67 PRO Intel P67 motherboard
12GB of Memory
NZXT Phantom 530 Case
750w PSU

My graphics is a 6850 which doesnt really matter as i will be getting rid of it :)

Im currently looking at just a GTX 970 and the cpu overclock, would this be enough?

Which 750W PSU might I ask?

It certainly seems that your 2500k may be up to the task with a good overclock, however you might want to grab the new graphics card (and possibly an SSD?) and then wait to see what it plays like
If it's no good, then you could upgrade to a used 2600k/3770k which you can pick up on the cheap

Additionally im not in a huge rush so i could wait a month or two (i have a back log of games im working through!)

Would it be worth waiting for the next round of cards to be released before taking the plunge?

They are due in June so if you can then do, but a GTX970 comes with that game and batman at the moment.

the PSU is a XFX Pro 750W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

Good, made by Seasonic.

Here is a quality GTX970,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N970WF3OC-4GD) £269.99
Total : £279.59 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

And SSD,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU) £89.99
Total : £98.69 (includes shipping : £7.25 Ex.VAT).

The offer of the games is swinging me a bit as i dont think the price reduction with the cards is going to equal the price of the games

Well the offers changed today and many GTX970s are on offer like the G1 windforce above.

And you can make it fit your case,
Clearance CPU Cooler 183mm
VGA Card 282mm (With Cage & Pivot Fan), 310mm (With Cage), 444mm (Without Cage)
Cable Management 26mm (Lowest Point)/ 34mm (Highest Point)

It certainly is a good deal at the moment, and I'm not so sure whether the new cards will instigate a massive price drop

Right ok looks like my initial assumptions where good, will probably pull the trigger on the 970 and get the free games.

As for the SLI is it worth getting a second card in a few months or just give it a year and put the money towards a new single card to upgrade with a full system build?

I am planning on getting a Oculus Rift when the consumer version comes out next year to make my dreams of flying a spacecraft come a little closer to reality :)

Update your boards BIOS.

Many boards need an update to "see" the newer cards.

SLI depends I guess on your monitor resolution and the Rift.

Ok thanks all, just bought the card suggested above.

You might have helped me but i think the wife is going to have a word when £300 disappears from the account :)

Don't worry, you can point at it and explain why its worth it and just baffle her with technobabble. Eventually she will tire and you will win :D
