Thanks.

Would I be right in saying 7970, 7950, 280x are all pretty much the same performance? I've lost track a bit, seem to remember 280x's were rebadged 7950s which were basically 7970s?

If so, and they're all basically all the same performance then I have a really wide choice and can just take the best deal.

7950 = 280
7970 = 280x

If you overclock, then the above is true.

EDIT - theres maybe 10-15% or so between a 7950 and a 7970?

If you're into overclocking, I have a feeling that 7970's are generally better clockers than 280x's. Luck of the draw obviously comes into play to an extent.
They might be essentially the same thing, but I'm pretty sure that Gibbo mentioned something about certain cutbacks/changes just prior to the 280x launch that affect this.
The lack of any real bench scores on here for 280x cards or ones running at decent clocks seem to suggest that it might be the case.

I would choose a 7970 over a 280x because I am very shallow and prefer the name.

But either choice would give a nice bump in FPS and wouldn't cost the earth after factoring in selling your 7850.

A 7970Ghz would be a pretty nice upgrade.
Wish I still had my reference one, it did 1200/1800 on stock volts. RIP.

I like those little 7850's they are pretty decent once overclocked

7970 is better though,but they do run hot compared to the 7850

Yeah I did the same upgrade a few months ago from an overclock hd 7850 (1200/1375) to an overclocked hd 7970. The performance was quite a bit better but the cards do run very hot and take a lot more power than the hd 7850.

Also the first hd 7970 I got was an HIS IceQ X and it would not go above 1075 on the core without artifacting. So I sold it and got an MSI Lighting hd 7970 which could only do 1150 on the core maxed out.

Anyway a few months later I thought sod it and bought an TriX r9 290 lol :D
