just posted this in my upgrade thread but thought this might get more attention...

right... i received all my bits today and i've started my build but it doesn't want to power up.

when i press the power switch, the light comes on and the fans spin round but only for a split second, then they stop and it does it again 2 seconds later... anyone know whats going on.

I've got a hiper type r modular power supply which only has a 4 pin 12v power connector... my mobo has a 8 pin power socket but according to the manual you can use a 4 pin in the right holes. not sure if thats relevant.

please help me, i won't be able to sleep tonight!

is it the Abit IP35 Pro? If it's one of the abit boards which has an LED post code what's it saying?

I had a similar issue with my Abit IP35 Pro when i built my new system, however mine worked fine a few times then died. Try clearing the CMOS on the motherboard to see if that helps.

If it's the same problem i had it's an incompatibility with the RAM which requires flashing the mobo to the latest revision. It could also be a faulty component. Try removing and reseating all components then stripping various out (Ie 1 stick of ram out, 1 in)

just the standard ip35 mobo.
theres only 2 onboard leds, one for main power supply and one when system power is on.

power supply stays on, system power goes on and off with fans.

will try your suggestions.

Check all the connections to the m/b ( inclusing the polarity of the speaker/led and any usb header connections).
Failing that take everything out and start with the min ( 1 x stick of ram, cpu, cpu cooler, gfx card) and build up from there.

As Chris_83 said, try booting with just the bare essentials :)

One stick of ram, re-seat the cpu, and put the graphics card in, and make sure everything needed has power, ie the 4-pin connector next to the cpu and the 24-pin connector.

When you re-seat the cpu check for bent pins on the socket on the motherboard as well.

i'm getting somewhere now.

clearing the cmos seemed to help. i've now sort of got the thing running with 2 sticks of ram and gfx card installed.

i say 'sort of' because i'm not quite there yet. when i boot it says 'cpu has been damaged or changed. press f1 to continue or del to enter setup' or something along those lines. if i press f1 it continues to boot to windows bu the cpu message is slightly worrying... or is it just something i need to sort in bios?

the other strange thing is when i power up, lights come on and fans start spinning for a few seconds, and then it cuts out, and after a second or 2 boots up properly... whats that all about:confused: it does it everytime i turn on and when i exit bios.

Sounds like my error. Apparently the Abit p35 boards can be choosy about the RAM. Flashing the bios fixed my problems.

can i flash the bios from a cd?
abits website says make a bootable floppy, but thats a hassle as i don't have a floppy disk drive.

Once i think. I could only get my system to boot by clearing the CMOS, my normal error was Memory Voltages. There's a Abit utility for flashing the bios however it is recommended to flash via bootable floppy.

'cpu has been damaged or changed. press f1 to continue or del to enter setup
I wouldn't worry massively about that, but I would go into the BIOS and maybe load the default settings back up, chances are it's saying that because you BIOS has incorrect settings listed for your CPU.

cool. i'll update the bios (i'm sure i can get my hands on a floppy) and check the cpu settings.

so this powering up, down and up again is the thing i'm really bothered about... will a bios update solve that? i suppose the best way to find out is to do it!

so this powering up, down and up again is the thing i'm really bothered about...

There have been a number of threads about that.
It happens to mine, powers up, powers down, then powers up after 5 seconds and then is fine.

Most people have been saying it doesn't harm the system. I think its to do with bios settings. As mine only started doing it after I overclocked.

yeah, just been googling the double boot thing and it seems quite common. apparently there is a beta bios that fixes it.

Things aren't looking so bad after all... might be able to get it put back together tonight.
