Hey guys,

First off sorry for making another one of these threads, iv been reading all of them but though i would make my own for my own question instead of raising an old one from the past.

Anyhow,

I've just got a vm 50mb line and need to choose the best provider.
Now I'm looking at either Astrawebs or Supernews. And i just cant decide :(

In my eyes they are basically identical, maybe $1.99 cheaper for SN if using the super special.

In reality what are the giganews/supernews takes downs like?

Do people generally have a better experience with one than the other on the vm 50mb line?

Thanks very much in advance guys :D !

Giganews with 50 connections and SSL (Top package) On Virgin 50mb.

Very reliable never had a problem apart from having to change the SSL port due to throttling thats the only problem in over 5 years, according to Newsbin Pro it downloads at a solid 53Kbps

Thanks for the reply :)

Should have mentioned however i dont have a lot of disposible cash so it will have to be between the two providers mentioned.
Circa $15pm

Its $29.99 a month, last month that meant £18.80 was debited from my account, it fluctuates slightly due to the exchange rate so its not much than your budget but then a budget is a budget so if you are using Virgin 50mb and want to make use of it then try and get the best deal you can, its worth checking the Giganews website they have a few different packages

I used to use Giganews but I get pretty much the same service from Astraweb for less money.

$96/year for astraweb, 20 SSL connections (on port 443 to get around VM managing torrents and usenet), easily maxes my 30 Mb connection, 1126 retention, unlimited usage/bandwidth.

That suits all my needs perfectly fine, and I've never had any real issues with it.

Astraweb - got a solid 50Mb/s+ (reads around 53.8Mb in Newsbin and over 150Mb on compressed headers) with 8 connections, any more and the speed slowed down! Confused me a little as I needed 16-18 connections on 20Mb but 8 was the peak for me on 50Mb.

Astraweb, I've never had any problems filling my pipe with just 20 connections, 50 is overkill ;)

exactly the same for me too - i dont understand why people think 50 connections is better than 20 - it still downloads at the same speed

I really dont understand why people get exited over someone offering 50 connections, you would never benefit from having 50

20 is by far more than enough.

I am with astraweb never had any issues :)
