I'm a lv 18 rogue at the moment and have been a bit stupid by selecting all my talents points into assassination. There is an option to "unlearn" my talents but I'm a bit worried that I would lose all my points and not get them back in being stuck at square one. What exactly does unlearning talents mean?

It means your talents are reset and you get to spend those points again. It gets more expensive to do every time you do it though.

When you gain a level (after level 10) you gain a talent point. You then choose where to put that talent point. If you unlearn your talents, you're able to then re-choose where they all go. So at level 18 you'd have 9 free.

There's nothing really wrong with assassination. I'd advise you to get some swords (or maces) and use them instead of daggers and then go down the combat tree (mostly).

If you really want to respec get improved sinister strike (in the combat tree) and then get malice. Both are really important early on.

Cool, i'll unlearn then. I'm still not 100% sure on how everything works since I find it weird that a lv 18 character can pretty much only use daggers as his best weapons.

What faction are you? At level 18 you'll soon be going to your first (or second, if Horde) instance where you'll be able to get a good sword.

I don't really know what instances is. I'm a human rogue at lv 19 now. I keep getting better armor but seems to be stuck with the daggers. they're quite useful but a big sword would be cool.

You're just about the level to find out Alliance wise, get yourself to Westfall and do the Defias pre-quests for the Deadmines, first Alliance instance and one of my favourites.

I have done a lot of Defias quests and killed hundreds of them already. I assume things change at lv20? I have a DeadMine quest but would probably get slaughtered there.

Edit:

Just had a look. Still need to find the messenger. He seems to be evading everyone. Everyone is always asking for him

Instances you need to group with another 4 players and they can take 2 or 3 hours depending on the instance.

Before you do the Deadmines, you really need to get the Van Cleef's Head quest as he is the main boss in the instance, can't remember what you need to do to get it, but if you go to Thottbot and search for the Deadmine quests it'll tell you what they all are and how you get them (there's about half a dozen if I remember correctly).

Jokester

Cheers for that. I'll ask around for Van Cleef's quest then since I can't recall having it in my log. Luckily there's always people looking for DM groups so getting in somewhere shouldn't be a problem

As far as training other weapons (you CAN use swords and maces - 1 handed) find a guy in stormwind trade district, he's in the shop the other side of the cart from the auction house door. Woo Ping is his name (I kid u not) he will train you swords and maces :)

As far as the different type of rogues go:

Assassination = daggers pretty much 100%, you have skills like backstab and ambush that only work with daggers and can spend points making these skills hit harder

Combat = Good for grinding and can specialise in the 4 weapon types (fist, sword, dagger, mace) if you wish, probably does the best SUSTAINED damage (burst = hemo or daggers) :)

Subtlety = HEMO(ridge) - instead of mashing sinister strike (the purple dagger icon) you have something different. Again this tree suits any of the 4 weapon types.

Ive been combat and Hemo so far and definitely prefer Hemo :)

Theres TONNES of info available out there its hard to anything vaguely WoW-like into google and not hit something useful very quickly :)

did u know after you level you can improve your skills to rank 2 /rank 3 / rank 4 etc. Find a rogue trainer in IF/SW
