So yeah.....

To fit in with all the other "WDYR" threads, here's mine.

Just upgraded to an i7-930 D0 due to a dude in the USA sending it over the pond for free. Nice chap, I hope i get to meet him one day.

Anyways, I plonked it into a Gigabyte x58a-ud3r joined by an Antec Kuhler Shelf along with 12Gb of Geil triple channel "Black Dragon" ram and a GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II/OC.

Using the turbo feature in the bios and the gigabyte easytune 6 prog it is currently sitting pretty @ 3.08Ghz / 1.28v / BCLK 140Mhz.

The temps I'm gonna need a bit of help with. Seeing the core temps peak at 67c during a wPrime long test is a bit confusing when the cpu temp shows 54c.
Whats up with that?
When should I start to worry with respect to the core temps?
Which should i pay more attention to?

Idle Temps on the left column.

Half way though a long wPrime test (on the left column).

Oh and the core 78c max values was from using the Intel Burn Test prog. I stopped it when i spotted those temps.

What say the veterans of OCUK?
How far can i push this?
Is it realistic to expect a stable 24/7 3.5Ghz machine from this?

Cheers.

Cheers Wazza.

The only thing i ditched was my trusty p4 2.8ghz HT + 2GB ram.

What temps can i expect with your awesome sauce settings?

Gigabyte GS-X58A-UD3R rev2.0 Bios v. FG

Still using Easytune and the Turbo thing i get this @ idle with 3.3Ghz

Ill start messing with the bios settings when i eventually peel myself of the sofa. RDP is great for those who just CBA.

Im guessing that a setting in the bios right?

I think its set to auto as i havent set anything as manual or fixed.

But it is late and i must hit the sack.

Ill be back tomorrow to bug the hell out of you with my lack of understanding.

cheers dude

Lets **** off my airflow and lack of cable routing space in the Shinobi....
Which will be replaced soon. I was pondering on the P193 but after seeing the much sleeker Fractal Designs Define XL USB 3.0 Titanium Grey i think ill be getting that instead.

Bottom Right - Cold Intake
Bottom Middle - Cold Intake which i hope provides more air to the GFX
GFX Airflow - Bottom to left and right
CPU Cooler Airflow - Pushing into the fins > left and right
Back Fan - Hot Out

Ignore the IDE cable, its only there for the drives i use for backups.

Click for a huge hi-res pic.

right then m'laddio

with intel turbo thingy disabled and easytune removed.

cpu freq - 2.799ghz
Vcore 1.216V

the bios adv. voltage control only gives me either:-
1.21250
or
1.21875

hold on....
im getting 3 diff values for the vcore.

pc health status - 1.236
MIT screen 1 - 1.216
mit adv voltage - 1.24375

which one tells the truth?

Set all that, few q's though

DRAMDRAM Voltage 1.500v .............. 1.500v [set to 1.66v] < shows up as pink warning you may die, deffo gonna be ok?
as does QPI/VTT Voltage 1.150v ............ 1.175v [set to 1.32v-1.35v you will need to test start with 1.34v]may need more with 12gb

The cpu does indeed throttle when idle, which is nice :D

turning turbo off gives the correct multiplier of 21x
running now at 3.57ghz.

gonna run a wprime long test now

core temps @ idle
CPU Core #1 : 36
CPU Core #2 : 38
CPU Core #3 : 39
CPU Core #4 : 36

60% through a wPrime and the core temps are avg 70c

what should i pay more attention to, the core or the cpu temp?

Sweet :D

It seems stable enough :D
You, sir, are a decent spoonfeeder.
I am eternally grateful for your help.

Is it a good/bad idea to drop the vcore a little only so it runs a little cooler?
