Another what ram question..

i dont have the motherboard yet but im thinking x38 board, or see if 780i gets released before christmas and then may go with that.

That ram seems quite cheap, wanted some really decent ram but if thats decent then meh :D

The P35 boards are very good, look at the Abit IP35-Pro. Overclocking beast, will suit all your needs.

Hi guys building a new pc as soon as possible with a q6600, i want to overclock it to as much as possible on air, 3 to 3.4 would be a nice oc!

but i really dont know what ram would be best, i was looking at this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-105-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

Im going to vista 64 so want the 4gb but will it be good to overclock with on air?

Thanks guys

You want low latencies but since Intels aren't all that sensitive to latency RAM higher than PC2-6400 is for overclocking low multi CPUs to the extreme

FSB and Ram speed runs best in 1:1 ratio. Most Core 2 Duo/ Quads currently have around 266mhz FSB (266x4). 6400 memory in DDR2 is 800mhz (400x2), but thats 'double rate' so it is actually 400mhz.

This means, 6400 memory will allow an overclock of the CPU to around 3.6ghz (400mhz FSB x 9 multiplier) without even overclocking the RAM speed, which is what most Quads/C2D peak at anyway. The higher speed ram is useful for when you want to hit a higher overclock AND want tighter timings. However, the Intel chip based systems don't see too much benefit with tighter timings in real-world performance, so people tend to stick with 6400 rated ram.

Regarding 2G modules it would depend on how much or if you intend to OC and also your CPU. The 2 x 2gb modules do not Over clock as well as an individual 1gb module. But, they can typically run up to about DDR900 or so. So, if you are Over clocking at a 1:1 ratio, you should be able to go to about a 450mhz FSB which is good for most CPUs these days. If you want to Over Clock using the memory dividers, then you may get a better top RAM speed from 4 x 1gb modules.

If it's an Intel with a multiplier of 8 or higher any bog standard PC2-6400 will do the job marvelously. The Geil PC2-6400C4 on sale this week would be a nice choice for £35.24 inc VAT. 4x1 for £70.48 Inc VAT http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=813 as you intend to use vista 64

I would agree, sound advice by Thermaltake

Hi again one more question if i was going to upgrade to penryn in future or with this build would the ddr2 6400 ram still be good or would i need better ram?

Thanks

No you will be fine the only difference with penryn (wolfdale- dual Yorkfield-quad) is 45nm and lager cache. The intel chips presently used are 65nm

Your ram will be fine and will support the penryn;) Just ensure your motherboard purchase supports wolfdale/ Penryn as you have not yet purchased your motherboard ;) .
