Thinking of a 4870 X2, 4890 or 275 (maybe in SLI)

Not sure if the SLI or 4870 X2 worth the extra money. I've got a Q6600 at stock and a 1680x1050 display. Mobo can do SLI but not Crossfire. Shame else two 4890 will be on the board. I assume ATI will make a 4890 X2 at some stage?

PSU was bought in mind to SLI-ing up two 8800 Ultras but that never happened.

Game wise I mainly play WoW :D. And the odd other game now and again. Got L4D installed but never played it. :(

So what to get....hmmmm.....too many choices!!

WOW AFAIK is more CPU bound than GPU generally.

At 1680x your not going to see the full benefit of multiGPU (with that generation cards) and as your apparently not an online FPS gamer you prolly won't need the speed anyway. A single 260 would handle everything fine.

It's worth paying £30 price difference between the GTX 260 and HD 4890.

You may not really need it at the moment, but chances are if you get a new monitor in the future it could be 1920x1200.

If you can get alternatives to sli/crossfire go for them instead, they use more power and if one card dies, you can have issues getting exact RMA replacements.

A 4890 X2 is unlikey due to power requirements required for such a card.

Ever played Wintergrasps or raided in WoW? I get about 15-20FPS, with 8800 Ultra, there in the heat of a battle. Switching effects off doesn't help, and can be deadly, there's just too much stuff going on the screen at once!!

I tried it on my old 6800GS machine, while I was copying data. Think I was averaging 1FPM (ie minute!!) in Wintergrasp on that machine! :p

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I've never played it and never will...

But my brother does and by far the biggest performance improvement for the game was increasing CPU performance when we were trying to get his setup upto speed with the game...

Wow is indeed CPU hungry, however a decent GFX xard won't hurt.

I know what you mean about wow FPS, try drake tanking on Sarth 3D before they made the void zones blue "Now, must watch for the red rings in the red fire on the red ground under the massive blue dragons and melle DPS, all within about 5 ft of me" all while sitting at 2 fps

Anyway, cards.

If WoW is all you play, then I would say save your cash for now, OC your CPU (get a new heatsink/fan set up if your using stock) and then see what it plays like.

If you want more, grab a 1Gb 4870 or a GTX260, there dirt cheap.

Oh and before I forget, play L4D! it's awesome:)

260GTX SLI still gets 40-50% gains at 1280x over a single card in many games, tho a single card is usually upto the job anyhow... tho thats nothing compared to the 70-90% gains at 1920x and higher resolutions.
