Ok your mission if you choose to accept is to advise on the following please :D
£150 -£160 max spend on an upgrade from a x800xtpe.(might go higher depending on how much i get for my present card).
motherboard is a asrock jobby ie both agp/pci but i think it makes sense to go pci, also PS is a 450W jeantec (not the best i know).
CPU A64 4000
Not a fan boy of either ATI/NVIDIA.
Thx in advance :)

This should be the card to do what you want ...

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

600MHz Core, 1400MHz Memory, 36 Pixel Shaders, 8 Vertex Shaders, 8 Geometry Pipelines, Shader Model 3.0, Crossfire2 Compatible, Silent cooling solution.
PowerColour 10+ in stock £129.99
(£152.74)

The OCuK Geforce 7900gs 512mb comes highly recommended by myself :)

@ just £140 it is ideal for ya!
Fast, Quiet, The 512mb mem is ideal and it will overclock like a beast

Mines has just reached 630core and 1.5ghz memory and is completely stable, both have a lot of legroom to move in now too! so 3dmark score is 5281 on a e6300 @ stock system

Stock clocks are 450mhz core and 1.32ghz mem so look at what I have got out of it already :)

What games do you play? Because for some games a 7900 GS/GT might be faster...
Oblivion, F.E.A.R, hL2, Cod2, mainy fps.
Usually game at 1024 * 768 but recently upgraded to a ws monitor native resolution 1440 * 900.
Do you think its worth adding an extra £20 and going for the x1950 xt on special offer or settling for something cheaper,i dont mind not having top of the range eye candy on but do want something looking good and playable.
Thanks for the replies so far.

Oblivion, F.E.A.R - I'd go for the ATi cards, if you can afford the x1950xt on special then go for it.
