Firstly apologies, there are always tons of question like this and it only takes a little search...... But when it's your own hard earned cash on the line a more specific line in asking is always acceptable :D

Secondly.... w0000000000000000000t!!! ;)
Funds cleared for expediture, wifey ok about it :D

Need an 8800GTX to match new 24" Dell monitor im also ordering.
can spend just over £400. liking the look of a pre-overclocked card with the stream processors o/c'd and guarenteed GPU/vRam o/c with a bigger cooler.
This card seems to fit the bill nicely. good brand and guarentee as well -
EVGA 8800GTX KO

Or do I go for the cheapest GTX, such as a leadtek and hope it clocks up?
It's important to be able to clock it. Im running modded Oblivion and at 1920x1200 I need all the horsepower I can get.

I've noted the latest nvidia drivers (posted here) are good so I'll get them.
Have'nt investigated too much about o/c utilities for 8800's. I hear coolbits still does'nt work for these cards and drivers. i also hear ntune is not too popular. Is powerstrip the one to use? (I've used that before and quite like it)

Using Win XP and AM getting a new Enermax 720w PSU to put your minds at rest!

Ah, since Im also ordering a new monitor at the same time, whats the best hardware replacement order? Im thinking PSU first obviously, then GFX card. Sort all the driver and options out etc. Test the GFX card then Replace monitor.
Don't want to encounter problems and not know if its monitor or GFX card!
First TFT ever so Im sure it's going to be a barrel of laughs!

Appreciate advice as it's my own money not a credit card. Somehow when its yer own cash it rams home just how much of an outlay top gaming gear is.
Can't wait though :D

Thanks

It seems to be the warrenty that most people decide on, if you intend to keep the card for a while then a longer warrenty is a good idea but even if you sell it you should get more money for a 2nd hand card with a lifetime warrenty.
From looking on here, all 8800gtx's will do 600/2000 using the standard HSF. Ive got an OCZ model that was the 2nd cheepest i could find and it has a lifetime warrenty, its fine at 620/2100 and now its in my water loop i will push it higher.

BFG are a good card with a warrenty to match! not sure if its worth paying the extra for OC version as most will clock very well and go past the over clocked versions easy. my BFG does 640 2100 and its just the standard version and thats on air!

depends if you want to save a few quid or go all out for the OC versions. (might keep the wife happy if she knows your being wise lol)

how about the pre-overclocked stream processors which, as yet you can't do yourself?
is it worth paying for higher clockers on these?
I've got the dosh and want to invest in the best platform without needlessly spending on an o/c which i can do myself.

The 8800Ultra has OC stream processers and from what i have read you can achieve the same results with an OCed GTX.
Its the age old story, if you want a guarenteed OC then go for an OC version but i doubt there is a 8800gtx out there that cant hit those speeds anyway.

looking at the link above (EVGA) it states shader clock speed 1460mhz. im assuming this is the stream processor speed (meaning its clocked) as comparing other GTX's the shader clock is 1350mhz, whilst the ultras also have higher shader clocks.

if so i think i'll settle on that fella. I've not had an EVGA card but I've heard they are a good reputable manufacterer.

I bought my car using my Switch card to pay the final balance when i picked it up, entering a 4 digit pin for your shopping at Tesco is one thing, doind it for £18,000 is another.

somehow paying by credit card makes spending lots better.
yeah yeah I'll pay it off by the end of the month or next month.......
and so it goes!
paying directly from my bank accounts seems to make me think twice about the value and worth of components.
since i've just flogged one set of hobby equipment its only right and proper the money is moved sideaways into another hobby.....
after all if i let wifey have some i'll be making a rod for my own back :D

Yes you can mate, A quick & easy bios mod & flash is all that's required :)

decision was made for me really.
The EVGA was pre-order and a higher clocker BFG was out of stock.
Got the BFG GTX O/C 600/1800 1400 shader. Lifetime guarentee and under £390.
BFG
Meh I could have gone elsewhere but my OCuK loyalty would'nt let me! Do I get a discount or free C2D for that? :D

Cheers Marshy I'll check out the bios flashing tool when I feel the need for more speed.
