Hi

I posted similar post recently but im gonna do another one cos im changing the subject sligtly. I am buying a new one specced like this:

Core 2 Duo 1.86 Ghz Processor (RETAIL)

1 GB DDR2 (667mhz) Memory

HIS X1950 Pro Graphics

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 Mobo

Corsair 520W PSU

Seagate 250GB 7200rpm HDD

Some case for £30

all of this cost like £560-£570. I think im gonna be doing medium overclock so im getting the stock cpu heatsink. Would that be a decent machine?

Im concerned about the ram because i dont know if I should pay the extra £20 for 800mhz ones, since im not going for max overclock. Also considering a 7900GS instead of the HIS.

gfx card is spot on :)

2gb ram would be better you can get 2gb of ocuk 800mhz ram for 146.

either way i think you should get the 800mhz ram as you want a reasonable overclock,

as for the cpu/cooler if you dont mind oem then you can get an oem version of your cpu and a ac7 pro cooler for abiout same price as retail cpu

Im having problems with the budget to do that. Is it very important though? I think i can play well the current games with 1gb and upgrade to 2gb later.

Is it not possible to get to about 2.5 ghz with 667mhz ram cos thats about what im planning?

As you can see im a noob

if i have worked this out correctly (cider kicking in ) that cpu has a 7x multiplyer soo 2.5ghz equals a 357fsbx7. sooo with ram set at 1:1 ratio it would be running at 714mhz wich is a small overclock on 667 ram. but most ram can be overclocked a bit soo it should work all though as im sure you aware high you go mroe chance of it not working above that.

dont know what its like or waht memory you been looking at but you can get 800mhz 1gb of ocuk memroy for 75 and 2gb for 146. or 800mhz ram with better slightly tighter timings can get geil for 93

agree with this. id get 2gb now otherwise youll end up with 4x 512mb sticks and 2x 1gb sticks will oc better

OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

Will that overclock fine?

that would be better yes because you wont really be overclocking it as is rated to run at 800mhz :) so you can do a bigger overclock with out making the ram run faster then its ment to. never used ocuk's ram but should be up to the task fine :)

you could even overclock to 2.8ghz :D and ram woul then run at 800mhz with 1:1 divider :D

New builds should definitely have 2gig RAM. If you can't afford 2gig RAM, maybe you shouldn't be thinking about building a new system right now.

if you can only afford 1gb then 1gb it is :) you can allways get 2gb later :) one of te reasons people tend to recomend agaisnt this is that 2gb in 2x1gb sticks works faster then 2gb in 4x512mb sticks. so when you do upgrade at later date ytou may want to sell the 1gb and buy 2gb new

I dont fancy paying double for ram when i dont need it atm (refering to http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/2gb-ram.html )

I will actually do just as thefishdude suggested, though I didn't know about the 4x512 issue. Thank you all

What if I get 2x512 now and later buy 1x1GB and arrange the ram to have 2x512 in channel A and 1x1GB in channel B? I would get dual channel but will it slow down the speed of the ram - im not using all four slots that way?

.

im not a 100% certan but i think its the fact you have 2 channels used that effects it, there slowdown isnt huge and you may not even notice. but there is a slight difference.
