When ive put my new cooler on and the thermal paste how long should i keep it on for and when ive finished how long should i keep it switched off for ?

Well AS5 claims 200 hours of normal on/off use, so using it for 1week and having off at night would be normal IMO.

I would not sit and time it, just use PC as normal and in 1-2weeks assume paste is at its best so long as its been off a good few times to cool down completely. :)

why do people leave their pcs on overnight? Are you really constantly downloading? I always turn my pc off at night. If you did that and just used it normaly through out the day then it would be fine.

Servers are always on 24/7, and they are not always downloading. I must admit, I do leave my computer on 24/7, and I do d/l, but even though it's not every night, I find I have less hardware problems than the ones that I turn off every night.

i turn mine off but some people believe that turning it on and off too often causes damage (although the damage from that makes such a small difference itll make it last maybe 15 years instead of 13 if you do it, when itll be ancient and gotten rid of anyway), and some people run folding@home overnight

Why do you turn yours off? :D

Because even while idle, the 'average' PC uses 100-150W of power. So well over £100 a year additional power bill. More than pays for any 'damage' caused by turning it off.

Hard disks being mechanical in nature generally last longer when turned off, although powersave modes on PC's can turn the drives off anyway which has the same effect.

Reduces carbon emmissions, etc etc etc. Folding etc is even more pointless imho. System uses even more power while the cpu's working hard, and its not like anyone pays people to fold. But each to his/her own.

Most HDD are now fluid bearing so wear is at start up and shut down, there is no bearing contact while running and the head never touches the platters untill it stops and has to find a landing zone, so running the PC is better, that start/stopping.
